Chania and another village?

I am looking at spending 2 weeks in Crete in September. I have found a hotel i would really like to stay in Chania but they only have availability for first week.

Can anybody recommend a village/town within say an hour's drive away which might be nice to stay for a second week and change of scenery? I don't want to travel too far as we will be flying to and from Chania.

we would have done the island hoppping thing but don't really want the travel to and from hersonnisos and chania.

any advice would be great

Cheers

Hi Emma

Why not try a week in Paleohora on the SW coast.

There are several buses a day from Chania's main bus station so it is not difficult to reach.

Paleohora is very different from Chania & has an excellent beach. You can also take a boat trip along the south coast from there to Sougia, Agia Roumeli ( where the Samaria gorge ends), Loutro & Hora Sfakia. The scenery is spectacular all along this part of the south coast.

Just another thought, whilst you are staying in Chania you could always take a trip to Paleohora to see if it is what you want & check out rooms etc. then. Regardless, it is a nice day trip from Chania.

Is it possible to do the boat trip along the southwest coast to include Paleochora etc. the same day you do the Samaria gorge.

Which town do you get the boat from and where is the best place to get the bus back to Chania.

Since we are staying in Almyrida do the buses leave from there to go the gorge or do we have to go to Chania

Hi Aquamarine

It would be possible to do the boat trip along the coast from Agia Roumeli to Paleohora but you would not have much time there. The 2007 schedules are here:-

cretetravel.com/To_and_from_Crete/Ferries_Cr…

The last bus leaves from Paleohora to Chania at 6.15pm. See :

bus-service-crete-ktel.com/maps3han.html#HAN1

Then click on Paleohora for 2007 timetable

You will probably be able to get an organised Samaria gorge trip to pick you up in Almyrida but these are quite expensive. Alternatively, it would be an earlier start (with taxi from your hotel to Chania bus station) to get the local KTEL public bus from Chania to the entrance of the gorge.

The usual route back from Ag. Roumeli to Chania is via Hora Sfakia (in the opposite direction to Paleohora). The last buses leave Hora Sfakia when the ferries from Ag. Roumeli arrive & drop off the passengers.

The best plan of action is to make enquiries when you arrive in Chania as to what is the most convenient alternative for you to walk the gorge.

If you do wish to go back to Chania via Paleohora ensure that the timetables make it feasible or you may have to stay the night or have a very expensive taxi ride.

Hi. Mick has a lot of good advice. Here is my 2 cents. From Chania is an incredibly simple bus ride to Sfakia. It is a direct bus that takes about 90 minutes. Chania is a big city and Sfakia is about as small as they come. The best of both worlds. You can get the bus at the main bus station in Chania and drops in "downtown" Sfakia.

Greatly appreciate the info and the bus and boat scheduals.

What would you recommend after the samaria gorge, taking the boat to Sfakia and then bus to Chania or would you go to Paleochora and then bus to Chania.

Which boat route would be best? Which way would more interesting and would Paleochara be better than Sfakia.

We will be there in September.

The Samaria Gorge essentially takes all day. If you start in Chania you have to take the ferry to Chora Sfakia for the connecting bus, there isn't a late enough bus from Paleochora back to Chania.

However you can start in Paleochora take the bus (06:00) up to Xyloskala, walk the gorge and take the ferry back to Paleochora at the end, this is a considerably less crowded way.
