Recommended things to bring back

Hi....well 3 more sleeps and we will be in beautiful Crete. I am just wondering what sort of things, food wise, that we are allowed to bring back home i.e. olive oil, olives, dried herbs etc. any info would be gratefully received. Many thanks in advance

Dictamnus is a good idea for dried herb as it grows only on Crete

I think you can bring back just about anything, just remember that if your going to bring back anything that contains liquid that you opt for plastic or metalic containers,a jar of olives once cost me several items of clothing and nearly ruined my luggage.

Hi....I always bring back olive oil, thyme honey and herbs.

If you take bubble wrap and strong plastic bags with you ( weighs practically nothing), it protects your liquid items on your return. :O) :O)

Thanks for the tips. Never heard of Dictamnus. Is it like Oregano?

Bubble wrap is a great tip. Would save any accidents like scaffolder had ;-)

Hi again..I have only ever had dittany ( Dictamnus) in a herbal tea.

It's an unusual taste that is difficult to describe.

I found it to be more like sage than oregano I think.............. :O) :O)

Tried to edit but ran out of time.

It is used in cookery, I believe but if so, is hard to identify amongst the other herbs that are routinely used.

Many with the same name as ours here in the UK are a different variety and so taste very different.

Cretan oregano tastes much better than ours, even when dried and their mint is usually spearmint........far superior in my opinion..

Perhaps our Crete DE's would have more idea of where Dittany is used in cookery. :O) :O)

I agree about the taste of the herbs. Bought Oregano back from Turkey last year and it's so much more pungent. Dried herbs are definitely on my list! :-)

Hi again

The best places to pick up your herbs is located in one of the streets that runs parallel to the Lake in Agios - the first street is pedestrian only, its the street next to that, that leads up to the town square - as you walk up to the square its on the right hand side - he does every type of herb that you can think of - I always bring back smoked paprika, Oregano & nutmeg - unfortunately I cant bring back olive oil as we don't take any luggage - but a few herbs and perhaps a couple of olive oil soaps fit into my handbag :-) Oh and the olive oil hand cream is wonderful too :-)

Have a wonderful holiday and I hope you enjoy Agios.
