Walk Delphi to Kirra on E4 trail:Trip Report

Thought this was an interesting trip report to share for some of you that are in Delphi and want to do something different. We just completed this lovely half day trail walk that was the route taken by pilgrims to the Delphi Oracle. We walked from Delphi to Kirra/Itea. You can start your walk from the main street on Delphi "Friderikis" just ask where the E4 trail starts (there is a reasonable sign). The walk is rocky but fairly easy (99% downhill). Just follow the paint marks and it will take you through the village of Chrisso and across the ancient olive grove. The arrows split here and we took the white ones to Itea. The walk took us about 3 hours. Once you are at Kirraa/Itea go to the bus station (near the main harbor on the Itea coast) and get the 1.90 euro fair to Delphi. The ride takes approx. 25 minutes:-)

Sounds lovely - & good to read that someone has tried out one of the walks around this area. When we visited in 2012 we decided we must go back one day to try some of the local paths. The only walk we did was up in the hills behind Delphi to a cave - pretty amazing. You can walk there from Delphi but it would be quite a long way with no bus return, so we drove up into the hills to a picnice area near a church & walked from there as we only had a few hours to spare.

It is a shame that people don't spend more time in the area rather than just quick day trips to the sites as the countryside is quite beautiful.

Thanks for posting, a timely reminder that there is far more to Greece than the islands and ancient sites.

#1 - I think the cave you refer to is actually what started it all off for Delphi; there have been remains found there of votive offering that significantly predate the ruins at Delphi.

Yes - that is the cave we visited. Very atmospheric! If going up there you need good footwear with non-slip soles as the floor surface is very uneven & very slippery. Plus take a decent torch. If you have a 4WD there is a small parking area quite near the cave, but it's a rough track to get there. Otherwise park off a decent level dirt road which ends at a small church & picnic area - after passing some very smart newly constructed houses which appear to be built to serve as holiday homes for the ski areas. I got actual directions to this point from the Delphi DE Mariha & they were very accurate. From there it is quite a steep scramble up a hillside to the cave, but not difficult to find the track. I think a return trip to the cave right from Delphi itself would take the best part of a day, allowing time to explore & stop for a picnic.
