Travel and supermarket

Hi folks, I am going to Anissaras in October for a week with my girlfriend (Staying @ the Mitsis Laguna) I was just wondering if there was a bus service that runs nearby into a larger town and if so what rates of fare should we expect?. Also if there was a market nearby where i can get gifts to take home for my family? Thanks

The buses run regularly (every 15 minutes in August, probably every 30 in October) on the main road inland above Anissaras. They run between Heraklion and Malia, and there are less frequent ones to Agios Nikolaos and Ierapetra. However, unfortunately it is over a mile from the Laguna to the main road.

There is also a limited bus service to the hotels in Anissaras, but I'm not sure what that's like in October - best to ask when you get there.

The nearest town/large resort is Hersonissos, just a mile or so away once you get to the bus stop. Fare is at most €1.60 each way, get off at bus stop 20/21 and walk down to the harbour area. If you are OK with a walk, you can walk to Hersonissos from your hotel along the coast, cutting off the corner near the Aldemar hotel. It's only a couple of miles.

If you look at my trip report part 3, posted on the Crete forum earlier today, there are lots of photos of Hersonissos on the link at the end.

And if you have access to Google earth, you can have a look at the map and see what I mean. Laguna is about 35.338 degree N, 25.375 degree E.

The area is mainly large hotels in their own grounds, though there are a few shops dotted around. If I were you I'd go into Hersonissos or Heraklion to buy presents.

A taxi from Anissaras to Hersonissos is only about €7-8 so if there are 2 of you its not much more than the bus fare and without the long walk.

The walk along the coast is quite pleasant but you probably wouldn't want to do itboth ways.

That's OK. Gog1 is probably right - but then I walk everywhere without really thinking about it!

Just to add, AFAIK the nearest market is in Heraklion. Check out 1821 and 1866 streets for a sort of open-air bazaar, mainly but not totally aimed at tourists. Heraklion is definitely worth at least a half-day out, about 45 minutes by bus, probably about €3.50 or thereabouts each way.

Thanks Steve, just trying to make the most out of this holiday as we didn't do very much when we went to sharm el shiekh. Do you know if Aquaworld Aquarium is any good? I have an interest in marine life
