Athens Itinerary, comments?

Hi! I am planning for a trip to Athens from Hong Kong in November 2014 for around 8 days.

Day 1 HK-->Athens

Day 2 Mycenae

Day 3 Lake Vouliagmeni Hot Springs

Day 4 Saronic Cruise

Day 5 Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poiseidon

Day 6 Delphi

Day 7 Athens

Day 8 Athens--> HK

1) Is this itinerary realistic? Too packed? Left too much time?

2) On average, how much are the day tours to Cape Sounion, Lake Vouliameni, and Mycenae? How much would it be if I travel by bus?

3) How much is the saronic cruise?

4) Aside from the cruise, what other islands would be worth visiting that is within the limits of an 8-day trip?

- For such a long trip and such a long stay, you have laid out an itinerary that does not allow any time in Athens itself except a quick Day 7 thing. You need at least a day to see the ancient sites and another couple of full days to visit some museum ( s ) and some of the more modern attractions. Athens has more than 6 - 7 world class museums and does not make huge sense to make an Athens trip without visiting a couple of them. All in all i 'd seek to have at least 3 full days in the city if i was visitng it.

- November weather can be anything from glorious to rainy and cold. Decide the cruise ship when here. I am not a bif fan of the cruise, it's too fast and too little time at each island. I 'd prefer a diy trip to one of the islands. Aegina is the closest and you can organise a great day there. Less is more.

- For an 6 full days Athens trip you already have 5 days assigned for things out of Athens. I would not add any other islands.

- Lake Vouliagmeni and Cape Sounion / Poseidon Temple are both N / NE of Athens center. Include them in the same day.

Thanks for your advice. This is my first time to Greece. I am now debating between Mycenae or Delphi. What are your thoughts? How much is a bus trip to either on average?

Bus is inexpensive. I 'd count for a fare of appx. 15 euros one way and around 25 euros round trip.

It is a hard pick indeed. You 'll have to make some reading, perhaps in Wikipedia to see which attracts you more.

Mycenaes: I 'd do it with Nafplion, perhaps a quick night over maybe? Mycenaes is an older site, Epidavros Theater is also in the vicinity. Mycenaes dates back from Bronze Age and as a whole we are talking about two sites and a town in some distances in between.

Delphi is a newer site, fdates around 600 - 400BC although parts are older and newer.

Which to pick:

1. Mycanes and Argholis area ( Nafplion town and Epidavros ) will be more difficult to diy. More to see. This is not necessarilly good if you rely on public transportation to do it. If you are planning to take an organised tour it will be far easier.

2. Delphi is a fantastic ancient sites, great nature, i 'd pick this one, even a quick nightover, if i was diy-ing it on bus.

Both are doable on public transportation or an organised tour. For a first time visitor it will be easier to do it as an organised tour. In this case both work, both Delphi and Mycenae but almost sure it will be a day trip starting early / arriving back late at night. If you diy it you 'll have some unfamiliarity with buses etc, but you may want to pick to make a night over.

To keep it simple, again, i 'd pick the organised coach bus tour. Many tour companies do therm, example "key tours", here: www.http://www.keytours.gr/
