One day in Athens

Hi everyone - I'll be staying at the Athens airport on the tailend of my honeymoon after having been in Santorini and Mykonos for 12 days. We are flying from Santorini to Athens on a Friday morning in September and staying at the Sofitel at the airport because our flight back to Boston is at 8:00am the following day (Saturday).

We want to head into Athens city after checking in at the Sofitel (should be checked in by 10am-ish). How should we get into the city and what's the best way to spend our day? We'll want to see the sites and then probably grab a nice dinner before heading back early evening.

All advice is appreciated :)

get on the metro to Monastiraki station, from there all ancient sites are walking distance, follow the pedestrian way into Andrianou street and down to Thission, from there going on the left you will reach Acropolis and then the Acropolis museum,in the opposite side of Acropolis is Filopappou hill,if you go up to the top you get the best photos of Acropolis and the great city of Athens,on a good day you can see up to the Saronic gulf islands,on the way back you can have dinner in one of many tavernas in the area, then the same way get the metro to the airport, ticket is 8 euros each way 14 euros if it is two of you.Remember not all trains are going to the airport, there is one train every half an hour, check timetable at the ticket office.

this is a good walking map,you can do it as on this map or you can go back to Monastiraki, you can catch the metro to the Airport from Syntagma metro station too.

If you do this walk you will also see the Andrian's arch and the temple of Zeus as soon as the pedestrian area ends.
