Flight Athens to Rome then ferry to Santorini - A, B or C?

Hello,

I tried searching the forum but couldn't really find anything specific enough..

June 25 2014 - Flying from Rome to Athens then catching a ferry to Santorini.

After Santorini the plan is to do Athens tourism wise.

Do you advise that I...

A) Fly Rome to Athens and then same day ferry to Santorini?

B) Fly Rome to Athens and then stay 1x night in Athens and then ferry to Santoirini next day?

C) Fly Rome to Athens, stay in Athens 4x nights then ferry to Santorini?

Should I book my ferry ticket before I go? Or when I arrive in Athens?

I have read various things about low and high seasons with that...

Thanks in advance for any advice :)

How about:

D) Fly Rome to Athens and take a connecting flight to Santorini?

You are at the airport anyway, and the flight to Santorini is only another 45 minutes.

Hey and welcome nztravelbug101:-) Since you'll be arriving at the airport, consider just hopping on a flight onwards to Santorini?! Takes barely 40 min.. you're at the airport anyway.. and chances are you can nail a great fare to rival the ferry;-) Sign up now for email alerts with www.aegeanair.com/ www.olympicair.com/ You can always ferry back to Athens for the experience.. the regular, traditional ferries take about 8-9 hours.. the fast speed cats can do it in 5.. you can check ferry schedules at www.gtp.gr/ www.openseas.gr/ Happy planning.. and enjoy!

It used to be possible to fly directly from Rome to Santorini.

Only with seasonal charter flights. There never was an "official" all year long Rome-Santorini connection with a major airline.

www.airtickets.gr

has NOW a flight from ROME to Santorini (with a connecting flight from Athens) and a flight back to Athens for 230 euros!!!!

so the actual airfare to Santorini is almost the same w/ the ferry rate!

It may be difficult to catch a same day ferry to Santorini unless you arrive very early in the morning (like 5am). The afternoon and evening ferries are not daily so you need to check. Shame direct EasyJet flights start just a couple days later - 29 June - it would be easiest option.

I really would not bother with a ferry, comes nearly the same price than to fly there, and flying much quicker. Check as others suggested flights direct to Santorini, time and money saving plan.

No need to spend a day in Athens, find a hotel, back to the airport, lot of hassle.

But what if she wants to take the ferry?

If I wanted to take the ferry I would, even if it was more expensive - though I might not if the scheduling made it really inconvenient. NZtravelbug, whether you take the ferry or fly, the important thing is to go to Santorini first, and spend whatever time you're going to spend in Athens at the end of the trip so as to be on the mainland and avoid any risk of cancelled flights or ferries causing you to miss your flight.

IMO there is certainly nothing quite like arriving in Santorini by ferry in daylight - as long as it's an open-decked one. I imagine the experience is nothing like as good on an enclosed one, and even worse on a cat/hydrofoil.

If it's about the view, then it has to be the 7:25am Blue Star from Piraeus. Open-decked ferries departing later in the day do not arrive at Santorini until midnight - too dark to see much. You can also get an open decked ferry on the way back to Athens but after a couple of days on Santorini, the view will probably not make such a big impression as when you see it for the first time.
