Hey and welcome wolf7:-) You'll need the Green Line metro from Piraues to Monasteraki.. takes about 20 min on the metro.. depending on where you'll be 'parked', can take an additional 20 minutes just to walk to the metro.. Piraeus is a big port;-)

From Monasteraki, you can walk to Akropolis taking in some sites en route via Plaka;-) If you're looking to go straight to Akropolis.. take the Green Line metro again and stay on it for 1 more stop to Omonia Station.. switch there to the Red Line (direction of Aghios Dimitrios) for 3 stops over to Akropolis Station;-) A cab will run you about 20E if that's an option.. you can hook up with another couple.. a few others and share the ridde;-) Have fun.. and enJOY!

Hi,

From where your ship docks (or close by) you could take the 843 or 859 bus to the metro station. However, you will have to buy a ticket beforehand at a kiosk selling newspapers.

Litsa, you said a cab will run about 20 E...is that from the port to the Akropolis? If we find another couple we would only pay 5 E per person.

**Do we tip cab drivers in Athens? I have never been to Greece, but am so excited to come next month.

Hey Laura:-) Yes, direct to the entrance/walkway to climb up to the Akropolis and approx 20E.. thereabouts.. so if there are 4 in a cab, it would average out to about 5E each;-) As far as tipping, not so much a 'must do' like here in the States, but I usually add a Euro or so.. or round up.. depending on distance/fare travelled! Keep enJOYin' all!

..Well, you can do somewhat of a circular route.. heading to Monasteraki, walking through Plaka to Akropolis then over to Syntagma Square for the Parliament Building for the changing of the guards (Evzones;-)

You can also start at the Akropolis.. not a bad choice actually since am guessing here you'll also want to take in the New Akropolis Museum.. these can take up a good part of the day depending on how long you spend on each;-) Just to note, you can hop on the Red Line metro for 1 quick short stop at Akropolis Station to Syntagma Square for the Parliament Building.. then either walk.. or again, hop on the Blue Line metro for another 1 short, quick stop over to Monastiraki where you board the Green Line metro for Piraeus;-) All up to you and your prefs for the day;-) enJOYin'!

Go straight to the Acropolis and see it first. If you dock early, you'll be able to see it minus the crowds that arrive by 10 am, and minus the heat of the day. After your time on the hill, you can descend to the Acropolis Museum (highly recommended). You can have lunch there, and use whatever time you have left in the afternoon seeing whatever else you have time to see before it's time to get back to the ship.

Your €12 Acropolis ticket includes six other sites, including the Agora and the Kerameikos, both very worthwhile with excellent small museums; also the Theatre of Dionysus, the Roman Agora, Hadrian's Library, and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. You won't have time for all of them, but see what you can in the time that you have. I'd suggest the Agora and the Kerameikos. You'll have a good day: enjoy it.
