Athens

My friends and I (eleven of us) will be visiting Athens in Nov 2012. I have searched the internet regarding transport from the airport and have been advised to take the suburban train to Larrisis Station (Central Railway Station) which is more convenient for all of us since we have lots of bags. Hope this is a direct train, not having to change on the way.

Secondly, pls recommend some reasonable hotels very close to the central railway station as we do not want to drag our bags for long distances to search for our hotel.

Thank you very much.

The only reason to catch the suburban train to Larrisis station is if you are getting an onward connection there, it's not the best place to base yourself to see Athens, which is what I'm assuming you want to do?

How many days are you coming for? Your best bet is to get a hotel centrally & come from the airport by either the metro or bus. Which stop you get off on the metro depends on eventual hotel choice, the bus goes to Syntagma Square.

Indeed, Central Railway Station is not the best area to stay for a number of reasons.

Not very central and definitley not a direct connection.

Direct connections to the center are possible by either the Blue metro line or the X95 Airport bus. Both get you to the very center, close to the sites and both are easy / direct / low cost options to get you there.

No reason to stay near the railway station. It's not really a good area and it will need a lot of walking or a subway trip to go anywhere.

Best areas to stay are around Acropolis Museum, Syndagma Sq., Plaka and Monastiraki.

Do you want us to suggest some hotels in these areas? What would be the reasonable cost in euros? around 50 euros per night? / between 50 euros and 99? / more? less?

The best way to come from the airport, into the city is Metro ( line 3 - blue) .

Its a direct line that departs every 30 min from the airport, and gets you straight into some of the most popular and tourist friendly areas in the center ( stations 'Monastiraki' and 'Syntagma' ). In those areas you ll find many hotels and you ll be in walkin distance from most of the central sights.

Larrisis Central railway station is in a dodgy, very unpleasant and not really central area which you really have no reason to visit if you are not travelling by train to some other Greek city.

Hi there

I'd suggest you look for a hotel in a central area of Athens and then use the X95 bus to take you from the airport directly to Syntagma Square. The bus runs 24/7/365, every 20 mins or so, is totally safe, cheap and there's lots of room in the central part of the bus for bags and cases.

Thank you so much for your response.

We are going to stay in Athens 9 to 12 Nov (3 nights) and would like to see as much of Athens as possible.

So, if you tell us your budget, per room, per night, whether you want doubles, singles or a dormitory type place we can suggest accommodation in a much more suitable area than near the Central Railway station.

Once that's sorted you can get detailed directions to wherever you're staying.

We shall take your suggesions and stay at the places you suggested as long as there are good connections from and to the airport (as we have lots of bags - coming from Turkey & Romania).

Appreciate very much if you could suggest hotels in those areas (as long as they are close to Blue Metro line and X95 Airport bus stops).

Hotels @ Euro 60-75 per night will be ok for us.
