Where to stay?

Two weeks from today we will arrive in Athens in afternoon for about 24 hours before going to Hydra to stay with friend. Any suggestions about inexpensive hotel and what to see? I am very grateful to read what others have posted so far! We are two middleaged women who like to explore new places.

there are many hotels in athens and attrctions.acropolis monument byzantine and national arceological museum are the most famous attractions...also you can visit for a drink the lycabetous hill and plaka and psiri area for bars and resraurants.plaka and psiri are the traditional areas of athens with nice old houses and churches...24 hours are about 2 days so you should choose a hotel in the center to have the oportunity to see as many sights you can.i will recomend you some hotels,,,,one budjet hotel in the center is acropolis house hotel.great location and stuff.if you want to pay something more go to achilleas hotel.a very modern place in an international and underground area but in a great location is fresh hotel.really nice hotel with great design but a little bit expensive.titania hotel is nice too.so for budjet try acropolis house hotel, for midle prices achilleas and for hotels about 160$ choose fresh and titania.

We are staying at Art hotel which is apparently a 4* hotel near Omonia Square in Mamid-May. Our rate is 79E for a double. Check Google site for a number of webs. We used hiptraveler.com.

Well, as Gas says, 24 h is not such a small time. Athens is mainly a walking city but with a really convenient sustem of public transportation too. Weather is not going to be as hot as summer so get a really good and comfortable pair of athletic shoes, a hat and sunglasses and go! The basics are Acropolis, Plaka area, Parliament Sq., National Archaeological museum and Lukabbetus Hill. You can do these in an afternoon and following morning. As for Acropolis leave some time early at the morning before your departure to Hydra ( if you have enough time left ) to avoid hottest hours of the day.

Thanks all for such good advice. I just get confused. Different maps seem to look so different. It is hard to tell. My traveling companiion is thinking of Parthenon hotel instead of Athens Gate. I like the idea of a roof top restaurant - although I suppose we could leave our hotel and go to the top of another. It is only for one night. Then we are off to Hydra to stay with a friend, then to the Porto Hydra Hotel for 3 nights - then back to Hydra.

heidilotus, good choices around Syntagma are the Cypria, Hermes, Achilleas, or the Adrian at the edge of Plaka..you will find all three perfectly acceptable at a decent price. Do not expect bargain prices in well located B-C class hotels. You can expect clean comfortable rooms with private baths, ac, tv, and some kind of continental breakfast. This location will put you closest to arrival on bus or metro and a perfect 24 hr. base.

You are going to love Hydra. Have a great time.

8. Re: Where to stay?

Just got back yesterday from Greece, stayed at the Hotel Parthenon in Athens in Plaka. GREAT location, clean, helpful friendly staff. We booked through hotels.com and got a great rate by going back and forth with them and the hotel. Breakfast was included and was very nice. For the price. location, and helpfulness of the staff, highly recommend.
