athens airport

athens airport

We have a flight out of athens (to chania) at 5 in the morning on 2nd October. According to metro timetables, there are no trains at night. The only way is taking a cab (which is a bit steep). Should we get a cheap hotel, spend a couple of hours and take a cab? Or is it feasible to spend 4-5 hours in the airport? Will the airport let us enter 4-5 hours earlier?

You also have the option of the X95 airport express bus from Syndagma to airport. The buses run 24 hours a day and only cost 6 euro per person. There is plenty of luggage space on the buses. The bus will drop you right outside the departures doors and that time of the morning will take around 45 minutes. So, if you got the bus at 03.05am you would be at the airport before 4am. Plenty of time to get through to your boarding gate. Of course, you could take an earlier bus if you wanted to.

Eamon’s right, the bus is a great option and won’t break the bank.

That is good to know. I am staying at the Attalos Hotel, so I assume a taxi to the Bus station and then the Bus to the airport.

Yes, a taxi up to Syndagma Square or a 15 minute walk depending on how much luggage you have really. A taxi will only cost a few euros to Syndagma. The buses depart rom the top right hand corner of Syndagma.

There is a ticket kiosk there but if it is closed just pay on the bus or you could even pop up there during the day before you leave and purchase them then and see where the bus leaves from. Don't forget to validate your tickets on the blue card readers inside the bus.

Unless you're leaving very early, before the metro starts running, the metro is a better option: the line is direct from Monastiraki to the airport. Just be on your guard for pickpockets.

Otherwise yes, a taxi to the bus stop, then the X95.

If you have only rolling luggage it's a 15-20 minute walk, pretty level, and doable.
