Do not use Gold Car

I rented a car through Gold Car at OPO. The car was absolutely filthy but ran OK, the service, well a bit strange. Not friendly and a bit pushy but hey, I got my car and off I went. Had a fabulous three week vacation through Northern Portugal which was just amazing.

Fast forward 10 months. My credit card was charged AGAIN by Gold Car!!! I immediately contacted my credit card company and both myself and my credit card company contacted Gold Car in the USA. Fortunately, I still had the confirmation email from last summer's the rental. The Gold Car rep had no answer as to why I was charged again 10 months later and even asked me for my credit card number! Really? I've had to cancel the card, report the charges as fraud and will now have to wait for a new card.

I thought I'd give the company a chance, and thought I could save a couple of dollars. I didn't save any money using them and now they are trying to rip me off. Never again...stay away! There are far more reputable car hire companies in Portugal

We paid just over £140 online for a type D car for 7 days and picked this company as it appeared the cheapest. We have flown to Porto before and hired a car to drive into Spain-previously we used Hertz through Ryanair. We expected some extra charges, but ended up having to pay another £210!!! We were charged £94 for a tank of diesel, 8.5 euros a day to take the car to Spain and nearly 2 euros a day to have a machine activated in the car for the Portuguese tolls despite explaining that we would only be travelling in Portugal twice - to and from the airport. After reading the previous post, we are going to contact our bank to ensure no further charges are made. I would strongly advise other travellers to stay well clear of this company - the small print is pages long and is in Italian!!!

This company are the Ryanair of car rentals. I had to pay an extra 161 euros to take the car, including 90 for a tank of fuel I didn't need (I used only half a tank) and 65 for extra insurance because I had a debit, not a credit card.

In addition to this, they don't have desk in Porto airport. We had to wait 20 mins for their minibus to arrive and take us to the car park 5 mins away. The staff were quite rude and would't let my girlfriend use the toilet.

Finally the car lights didn't work properly. Avoid.

We also made bad experiences with Goldcar in Porto, just last week.

The woman was so unfriendly and they pushed us to pay 49,- for a full insurance. Even we already booked and payed the full insurence, she told us that we have to pay 1200 if there happens anything with the car (even it is not our foult or eve for anything small)

Do NOT recommend this car rental agency at all. Booked online to pick up a car at the airport of Porto, Portugal. We were told we had to leave 900 euros deposit or pay for an insurance (which we thought we had already). In addition we had to pay for the full tank of gas and were supposed to bring the car back empty (how is that possible anyway?!). We also had to pay for the "Via Verde" in advance but on top of that they sent us another bill with the charges of the highway!!!! The car they gave us was filthy and wasn't in very good condition (wipers not working well, etc...). Do NOT plan to go there again!!!

I also had bad experience with the Goldcar in Porto. Overcharged me with extra insurances. I was with my little boy and could not argue for a long time. I left the car back almost fool of petrol and they have never reimbursed the cost of it even though I was told they would. The stuff was unfriendly and the car was filthy inside. You have better options on Porto airport.

Unfortunately I found this topic too late. I rented a car from Goldcar Porto and had a bad experience too. Never more.

First, the agent tried to sell me the full insurance, (the one your have no excess to pay in case you have a claim) which the addition of it would cost more than the price paid for the car, I said no, thank you. So, from there she changed her mood, gave me a black car and made sure to take a note of every single tiny scratch the car had, even the ones your can get rid off just polishing the car. Bad start. Something on my mind was saying that I was about to be screw up in the end of the story.

The policy of the company ask you to return the car with the petrol tank as it is, you don't need to top it up, they will refund you the fuel that remained in the tank, but, you have to pay them a full tank, definitely with a petrol much more expensive per litre than you can find on petrol stations. The car hired was a Fiat Panda, which holds 37 litres, they charged me €73 for it, so, €1.97 per litre of petrol! The price of it at any petrol station is around €1.40. By the way, they couldn't even say what was the capacity of the tank of the car that I was hiring; I had to find out by myself on internet. I argued that I would return the car with the full tank anyway, the answer was "Sorry but you are in the wrong place because that is not our policy" in another words, you have to buy the petrol from them.

I didn’t know about this policy, the “voucher” sent to my email to be printed came up in blank! And I have no time to search for another rental company.

After 4 days with the car, I retuned it, all checks done, all fine, I got my flight back home. Two days later I received an email saying that the car had a broken mirror on the right side! I knew it!!! They would try to screw me up some how, just because I didn’t paid for the non excess insurance! What a bastards. Well, I was sure that I delivered the car in perfect conditions; this was actually an attempt from them to get money from me. So, I emailed a copy of my OK check out paper saying that the car was in perfect condition. After that, they didn’t bother me anymore.

Conclusion, don’t trust them, don’t hire a car from them. There are numerous of other car hire companies around there. Make sure you get a good, reliable one.

Eles me cobraram €73 pelo tanque!

Precisely our experience, now one day back from 'holiday'.

We were defrauded not only with the full/empty petrol tank policy (which we were unaware at the time of booking via Expedia), but with their "insurance" for 120 Euro offer (which we declined) and subsequent Excess credit card swipe of 900 Euro. We treated the car very carefully (parking it in secure hotel underground garage) and returned it in original condition with half tank. Not only did they not re-imburse the unused petrol (charged for 90 Euro), they claimed that paint scratches UNDER the front and rear bumper were by us (you had to sit on the road and look from underneath, and there were plenty of them and clearly pre-existing!), and wanted to charge us 521 Euro (!) from the Excess! We refuse to sign anything, and have left it there. This is illegal practice by any standards.

They spoilt our otherwise nice Madeira holiday with their scam, and should be accountable. Of course one is unfortunately unaware of this scam until after the booking ... (I would have accepted the petrol aspect of additional £90, but an extra £480 or so excess scam on top of the otherwise reasonable sounding £69,- car rental for one week is clearly a rip-off and this unholy practice must be stopped:

It is incomprehensible how a rental company can get away for so long in the present day European Union!!! Some EU regulator must look into these practices.

I will see to involve 'Which' and other organisations into stopping this fraudulent practices.
