Espinho beahes & hotels

We are planning to travel to Porto with 2 young kids in late July. And we are looking for a good hotel (good service & convenient) with a nice sandy beach nearby.

I have 3 hotels in mind.

1) Praia Golf Espinho near Baia beach

2) Solverde near Granja beach

3) Casa Branca near Lavadores beach

Can anyone tell me are those 3 beaches I mentioned above are sandy but not a rocky beach?!

I can see from some internet pictures that Baia beach is a nice sandy beach but I am not sure how Granja beach & Lavadores beach look like.

Can anyone also give some comments on those 3 hotels please. Are they good & convenient? How much will it cost to take a taxi from Oporto airport to those 3 hotels?

In my opinion the best is the Solverde. Don't worry about the beaches! They are all fantastic!! Beware that Casa Branca hotel is not in espinho... actually it's quite far from espinho. it´s located in Vila Nova de Gaia. I wouldn't suggest this to you.. the beaches are crowded and aren't as beautifull as Espinho. Perhaps you should also consider Ofir Hotel (near Esposende - 20 km north of Porto, it's not a 5 star hotel but is very decent...) The beaches here are beautifull and less crowded.

A taxi from the airport to Espinho is probably around 30-40 euros (this is my guess... I don't know for sure...)

I was in Espinho last weekend and it was obvious by the number of people waiting with their beach gear for the train back to Porto that it is very popular! The beach is mostly sandy and quite big. It is on the Atlantic don't forget so there might be big waves if the wind is in the right direction.

Thanks very much for your advice.

So if we stay at Solverde hotel, does this hotel near the 'Espinho centre'? Because I know Praia Golf is in the town centre but I am not very sure about Solverde hotel.

Becuase we are travelling with a 5-year-old & a 1-year-old, so we would like to stay at a hotel which is within walking distance to the town centre.

And does anyone know exactly how does the Granja beach look like? Is it a nice sandy one?

Very appreciated for your reply!!!!

To 'Sergios3',

Regarding your suggestion of Ofir Hotel, I saw from internet that it is a decent hotel located on a beautiful beach. But my concern is that it is in Esposende and I know nothing about this town. So can you please tell me -

1) Is this hotel close to Oporto airport?

2) Is this hotel near the Esposende town centre? And is there anything interested for tourist in Esposende?

Thanks very much.

The hotel is in Ofir (a small village where a lot of people have an house to spend the weekends or holydays) located in a Natural Reserve.

It's about 2 km from Esposende. It's located right on the opposite side of the River (Cavado river), but the small bridge that connects both sides is currently under reconstruction. The cars cannot cross it and have to make a shift through another bridge located 6 or 7 Km away. Perhaps late july the work will be completed...

You will not find any major touristic points of interest, (besides the excelent food!) in Esposende, but you'll be at a driving distance from Porto (30 Km), Viana do Castelo (30 Km), Braga, Guimaraes, Barcelos..... Hiring a car is definitely a good option if staying in Ofir.

Esposende its about 25 km far from the airport (closer than Espinho actually...).

Thanks for your informaion on Esponsende, I have been to the website you suggested and I am sure it is a very beautiful place with very pretty nice sandy beaches. But I think it is not suitable for us as we will not hire a car. So we will stick to Espinho as our holiday destination.

Actually have you been to Solverde & Praia Golf hotel? How will you describe those 2 beahes near these 2 hotels?

Just to consider the location & the beach, is Praia golf better than Solverde?

I have only been to Solverde for a meeting (didn't spend the night there).

The hotel is great (it's a 5 star and has been refurbished last year).

The praia golf I don't know that well.... but for the descriptions I found it is also a very good hotel.

The main difference between the two is that while the Praia Golf is located inside the city of Espinho (right in front of the Espinho beach, which is wonderfull and very big), the Solverde is located 2 Km far from the city. it's also on a beautifull beach but quite isolated....

I think that considering your wishes, you'd rather be in Praia Golf that, although this is not as classy as solverde, its also a very good hotel and you're on a walking distance of a lot of restaurants, bars, city center, the Casino (a very good one) is right next door and the beach is across the street. You also have the train station 300 meters away, so you are 15 minutes away from Porto, 2:30 hours from Lisbon, 30 minutes from Aveiro and 45 minutes from Coimbra by train. All beautifull cities that deserve a visit!

Hope this helps you.

Enjoy your holidays!
