And you are right:

Place on the border worth visiting... I really don't think so but Viana do Castelo is a beautiful city well worth a visit.

Tuy (or Tui) is a sleepy little place, pleasant enough but nothing special. I would agree with Alface that Viana is nicer.

Thanks for your help. Almost have this sorted and TUI is off the agenda. Am I correct in thinking there are only 2 trains a day at inconvenient times.

Viana de Castelo is where we are going.

Any ideas re buses from Vigo/ Ponevedra to Viana please

You can ask in the relevant Spanish forums about the trains on that side. Or visit www.renfe.es

The only trains crossing the border are those shown in this timetable:

cp.pt/StaticFiles/…porto_valenca_vigo.pdf

Tui has no other trains by the way.

If my reading is correct, there is a connection for Santiago de Compostela at the station of Redondela de Galicia off the morning train, with about an hours wait and off the evening train with half an hour's wait on weekdays and a bit longer at weekends but please do check on the Spanish sites.

There is also a parallel bus service Porto - Valenca - Vigo operated by AUTNA times at www.autna.es which others have commented upon as being useful.

Hope that helps.
