Is Vila Nova de Gaia a good place to stay?

Hello!

We are planning a trip to Porto in June (5 nights including the St. John's Day).

We prefer to stay in an apertment rather than in a hotel. Now we were offered a nice apartment in Gaia (near Cais de Gaia and the Wineries). Is this a good area to stay in?

Or would you rather recommend a place closer to the citycenter as a base for exploring? (We found another apartment near Rua de Santa Catarina)

Many thanks for any comments!

Vila Nova de Gaia is actually a large spread out suburb, so depends which part you intend staying in. However, since you mention that the apartment is close to the Cais, then that sounds good. You will have a good selection of restaurants and cafés nearby and it is a good place to watch the fireworks from.

(The area around Rua Sta.Catarina is busy during the day but tends to be very quiet at night with less selection of places to eat and drink in).

From Gaia, if you want to go to Porto city centre, you can walk across the lower level of the Dom Luis Bridge and then take the cablecar "funcicular dos Guindais" up to the centre.

Hope that helps.

Thank you!! This helps a lot. If the downtown area around Rua Santa Catarina is very quiet at night this is not the place for us to stay.

The apartment in Gaia is located in Rua do Agro (in the area between the Wineries and the Arrabida Shopping centre). It is said in the advert that it’s about half an hour walk to the city center across the bridge. The building itself is a big block of flats but it has a very nice view towards the Douro (5th floor).

How much nights should we plan for exploring Porto? Are 3 nights sufficient or do we better stay for 4 nights? We have 12 nights in total and will be touring the North of Portugal before going to Porto. We prefer to take our time and not to bustle from one sight to another.

Best regards

It depends. If you are just planning on staying in the North and not going to Lisbon etc during your 12 days, then you could do 4 nights in Porto. But if you plan on visiting other parts of the country (not just the North) then 3 nights is enough I think.

By the way, although I don't know Rua do Agro exactly, just be aware that some of the streets in that area are narrow, dark and hilly - not dangerous or anything but it's just so that you know before you arrive. In fact, Porto is full of hills so bring good walking shoes. Have fun!

Vila Nova de Gaia, or simply Gaia, is a city in Portugal. It is located in the Porto district, south of the city of Porto on the other side of the river Douro.

The Vila Nova de Gaia city proper has a population of 178,255 and the municipality contains 24 parishes with a total population of 288,749 inhabitants, being the most populated municipality in Norte region.

Gaia together with Porto and other 12 municipalities makes up the commonly designated Porto Metropolitan Area.

It is also well known for its "lodges" (locally known as "caves") where the world famous Port wine is stored and aged. The lodges have become a major tourist attraction.

Hi again and thanks a lot for your helpful comments!!

We have been to the Lisbon area and the central part of Portugal last year. It was a great experience! That’s why we are already coming back this year, concentrating on the North of the country this time. We are planning to go on a round trip first and end up our tour in Porto.

So the question is how many nights to spend in the city itself. We will already have been to Braga and Guimaraes when we arrive in Porto.

But maybe we need an extra day because of the festivities on the 23rd and 24th of June? They are probably a special attraction to take attention to. So 4 nights in Porto might be better than just 3!?

Best regards
