Yes, Mike, watched the fireworks the last couple of years, and can highly recommend the event. Not as grand a display as New Year's Eve, but fantastic nevertheless. Well worth going to watch and, as always in Madeira, a wonderful friendly atmosphere. Fireworks to music on lovely warm June Saturdays - definitely worth a visit.

Historically the Atlantic Festival in June was a competition to award the winner the opportunity to supply the New Years Eve display, however the last couple of years I believe that it has not been the case, but still not all displays are from Portugal, only the last one. About 7 years ago UK won but declined because the costs and logistics are astronomical. The last Saturday of June is always the Portugese display. That said, anything could change this year because of economics, but still a great event.

If you want a memorable evening, book a table at the Restaurante do Forte in the Old Town. All inclusive meal and continuous wine for, I believe, 39 Euros a head and a superb situation from which to see the fireworks. We did this ast year. Check the restaurant review section for more info.

We've been lucky enough to see the June fireworks twice. First time, we watched from a bar on the harbour (the old 'balloon bar' - paid a couple of euro each for seats). This year we watched from the Santa Caterina Park, which is a little further from the harbour but with an elevated position has fantastic views.

The town is heaving on fireworks night - but in a nice way! Great atmosphere, lots of happy, excited people.

Plenty of time for dinner beforehand as the fireworks don't kick off til quite late (about 10.30 I think - flowercity can probably confirm time).

Have fun!!

I would say it isn't necessary to go for an elevated position for The Atlantic Festival fireworks. Unlike New Year's Eve where the display is all over the city, the focus for The Atlantic Festival is the seafront, and we always watch from The Avenida do Mar.

If you're thinking of eating out in town or The Old Town before the fireworks then it's best to book a table, as everywhere is very busy and you may not get your first choice.

The displays start at 22.30.

Enjoy.
