Public transport Sintra region

We are visiting Portugal in May and are thinking of staying in Sintra. To visit Sintra itself, but also as a base to visit Lisbon and the coast. We would be using the public transport.

I have read warnings that it is unsafe to take the Lisbon-Sintra train at nights. Is that really true, or was it "one bad thing" in the past? Or would it be just as any big-city-suburb train where now and then things happen, but in general tourists are just as safe or unsafe as elsewhere.

Which villages/cities can be reached by bus from Sintra?

All information and experiences are appreciated, thanks.

Just as any sub-urban train. The bus company in Sintra it's Scotturb. You can go to Cascais and several beaches around Sintra.

You can also visit Queluz (national palace), Estoril, Cabo da Roca from Sintra by bus. For more info on Sintra take a look at www.portugalsintra.com . Have a nice stay!

local bus times are at

www.scotturb.com click on Horários

but they don't have a route map or even a list of routes!

I recommend the 403 bus from Sintra Station to Cascais via Cabo da Roca and the 441 to Praia Grande and Praia das Maças, which leaves from the Portela de Sintra station, not the main station in town. If the Sintra tram is running it is a nice way to get to Praia das Maças - but there is an announcement on the local council website stating that owing to damage to the overhead wires the tram service is currently suspended until further notice.
