Porto is a little too far for a day trip, u r better off at Sintra or other nearby towns. I really like Obidos. Below is a past discussion on this topic :

You have to let us know what kind of stuff you like to see, otherwise it is really hard to make suggestions. Everything is opened here. Four days is not a lot of time. You can make it to Porto by train, easily, but it will take you 2.5 hours/3 hours each way (I believe). So, maybe not really a day trip. Sintra will be nice, Cascais in nice, Guincho is nice. Lisbon is nice!

Because it is winter, the sunset is around 17h30, 17h45, so it is better to get up early to use the most of the available daylight time.

Saying this, going to Porto as a day trip, would mean a very long day, because it takes around 3h by train each way , and so the first train that arrives at Porto is around 10h, 10h30.

So it is better to know in advance what you want to see there to plan accordingly.

Regarding Sintra and Cascais, these are very near Lisbon, with frequent public transportations, so no problem here.

Other places of interest, are Mafra and the Convent, Óbidos, Évora to name a few.

Obidos is just lovely. We have brought a house a few miles from this town and visit it loads. There is a lovely little coffee shop just 3/4 of the way up the main street where it is great to while away some time over fab coffee and cakes. Obidos has various events on throughout the year eg. the chocolate festival etc. and it is worth looking at the obidos web site to see what is on during your visit. Christmas is really lovely with the whole town lit up and a special Christmas village set up complete with ice skating rink! I never tire of the place.
