5 hours in Lisbon!

We have a 7-hour layover during the day in Lisbon late December, just before Christmas. That leaves us about 4 and a half hours to see a tiny bit of the city rather than sitting in the airport.

Any ideas where we should head for just one afternoon?

hi AGMNJ,i'd get a taxi from the airport and go to rossio and savour a few hours in the heart of the city.there's several places around the rossio area where you can get a taxi back to the airport.

I suggest you book a private tour. You can be picked up and dropped off at the airport.

If it's a dry day, make your way to Rossio, take the Santa Justa elevator for some great views of the city. This will give you your bearings. Take tram 28 up past the cathedral and miradouro santa luzia, and take a walk up to the castle. It's a lovely city and if you don't take the tram you'll kick yourself later.

Are there any kiosks to buy a day ticket for the tram and buses near the cruise terminals ?

AGMNJ has a lot more chutzpah than me. I'd be scared you-know-what that I'd miss my connection at the airport, but so be it.

If you're definitely going to head into the downtown area, I think I'd try to book a cab up front.....as I recall there are honest cabbies who list here. Keep the cab for your total minimal time in Lisbon. Go to the Castle, go to Rossio, Go see Santa Justa. The suggestions from the DE's regarding what to see are spot on.

(Don't ride the 28..........lose your passport and you'd be totally out of luck!)

If you are flying onward in Europe, you probably don't need to be at the airport 2-3 hours ahead of time. If you are on your way back to the US, timing could be a problem.

If you are heading back to US via a bigger hub (AMS, FRA) it again, won't mean being at the airport way in advance.

You've not offered many details as to what you have going on, so it's not easy to make the correct recommendations.
