When and for how long overall? At this time of year I wouldn't bother with the Algarve. Seaside resorts out of season tend to be rather depressing for tourists. Even in summer, unless it is sun and sand you want, I would not worry overly about the drive all the way down here. You can find some very decent resorts in the centre and north.
The list of places worth a visit could be endless, depending on your interests and dislikes.
First timers...so all is new...a few cities are fine...days open could be a total of 8 including Lisbon....Would rent car, if doable by train, that's OK....Thanks!!
Fly in from London on January 5th....
Forget about the Algarve, it's empty in wintertime and although the climate here is mild, it won't be beach weather.
Here are some links for you:
I would recommend you start with Lisbon and surroundings, thereafter Porto and if time left Evora. You don't need a car in Lisbon or Porto. If desired you could do without a car and use public transportation.
in Sintra there's a circular bus going around all the sites. You can pick it up near the railway station.
Hope that helps.Edited: 3:51 pm, December 04, 2012
