Lisbon to Gibraltar

Looking for some ideas as to bus or rail to Gibraltar...Most opinions conclude that hiring a car is best, but that does not work for us...All suggestions will be appreciated!!

Thanks!!

Hiring a car is not necessarily the best! There is no rail service.

Your best option is probably the bus service operated by alsa.es -

There are departures as follows:

Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday

Lisboa Sete Rios - depart 13:30

Sevilla (est.prado) - arrive 21:30

Daily:

Lisboa Sete Rios - depart 21:30

Sevilla (est.prado) - arrive 06:15

Transit time: 9h 00min

Price:37.0€

From Sevilla Prado de San Sebastián Bus Station, get the T.G. Comes bus that runs to La Linea and walk across the frontier. Transit time: 4hrs.

Timetable here: http://www.tgcomes.es/horarios_33_english.htm

TAP - Air Portugal operate daily from Lisbon to Sevilla. However, one-way prices are in the region of € 300 to € 400. You would then need to get from Seville Airport to the Prado de San Sebastián, Sevilla, then the T G Comes bus to La Linea.

There is no Madrid- Gibraltar train, not even one to La Linea you would have to take a train to Algeciras than a bus to La Linea and cross the border. I would rent a car!!

Than you also have the ludicrous option that you'll get you to proper Gibraltar: a plain Lisbon London and another one London Gibraltar (now Britisairways and Easyet operate on this last route). Can cost you using Easyjet as low as 130 euros but would take you about 12 hours including spending a night in London and transfering from Heatrow to Gatwick. Can take only a morning and a bit of an afternoon using BA for the 2 flight but that would cost you.

Again been twice to Gibraltar always by car. If you can't go by car than take the bus or the plane Barlavento suggested according to your budget.

You can fly Lisbon - Madrid - Jerez (Jerez de la Fronteira). And from there a bus to Gibraltar.

The flight:

Low cost airlines: Easyjet or Air Europa from Lisbon to Madrid.

Iberia from Madrid to Jerez

or since you have an intercontinental destination you could ask your travel agent to include the stretch in your travel and it may not cost more.

From Jerez it's 2 1/2 hrs by bus to Algeciras. From the bus station it's a 5 minutes walk to the Gibraltar border.

Be careful if considering Jerez de la Frontera as a transit point as frequencies may be substantially reduced in winter. It has few scheduled services anyway.

Another alternative might be to fly Lisbon to Malaga with TAP - Air Portugal. There is a daily service but one way tickets are pricey.

You could then take the Airport Shuttle from Malaga Airport to Marbella bus station. (45 minutes) and then an Avanza Bus to La Linea. (90 minutes).~

Yet another difficult option (getting from Lx to Gibraltar without a car or a private jet is no easy task):

Taking an express bus from Lisbon to Albufeira and from there taking a tour of Gibraltar (35 euros return) and not returning, guess that also depends on if they will allow whatever luggage you have on a tour with them.

Sites for the trip Lx Albufeira:

http://www.renex.pt/

http://www.rede-expressos.pt/

Tour of Gibraltar:

It would be inexpensive and would only take you to change transportations once. Buses Lisbon to Albufeira are very frequent so maybe this wouldn't take too long on the whole...
