Leisurely drive from Lisbon to Tomar

Hi,

We wil be staying in Lisbon for a couple of nights in early July and then need ot travel up to Tomar. We have been to Tomar many times and always take the direct route up the A1 and then towards Torres Novas.

We will have a bit more time this trip so was thinking of a more leisurely trip up the silver coast perhaps? Can anyone suggest a route with nice places to stop for lunch or dinner etc en route.

Many thanks in advance

Steve

Take A8 from Lisbon and stop in Mafra for the palace. Peniche for lunch and maybe Caldas da Rainha in the afternoon.

Alternatively if you love wildlife and untouched by man areas, also take the A8 and be around 8 ish in Peniche and go for a boat drive to Berlengas islands spending the day there. They are so so beautiful. Beware though, cause of the wild wild sea there, this trip is not for the the faint hearted.

Here's a different suggestion:

Forget the sea, head inland from Lisbon. Drive north as you would normally but exit near Vila Franca de Xira, and take the route to Coruche. Follow the path of the river Sorraia till Mora. This will give you the opportunity to see the fertile plains of the Tejo valley. In Mora you can visit the "Fluviario", a public aquarium dedicated to the rivers of Portugal and the world. Then head north, pass by the Montargil reservoir and "Ponte de Sor" crossing fields where bulls are grown for bullfights. Cross the river Tejo again just as you reach Abrantes, and turn west. Close from here you will find the castle of Almourol on the middle of the river. There is a small boat that will take you there, and it is highly recomended! Now you're very close to Tomar, just 20 to 30 min drive to the north.
