Alcobaca or Batalha

Although we would like to visit both these places we will probably only have time to visit one of them. Which would you recommend more?

Hi 31cats,

That's a hard decision, they are very different. Personally I prefer batalha but this is just a personal view. However, monuments apart, the town of Alcobaça is probably more interesting. If you have a car though, it will be easy to visit both.

Agree.

Both were monasteries, both are very impressive, but while Alcobaça was built by Cister monks, upon donation by our first king D. Afonso Henriques (started to build in 1178), Batalha was built by our king D. João I to comemorate our victory over the spaniards at the nearby Aljubarrota field (started to build in 1386). Both took many decades to build.

You can have 360º virtual visits to both (and other monuments) at:

http://www.360portugal.com/

It is in portuguese, but press on "Patrimonio/World heritage" and then choose the one you want.

indeed a tough choice to make. both are impressive in their own right, although batalha never fails to take my breath away every time. an alternative is to choose one, spend time exploring its museum and monastery, and go to the other for just a quick look. a couple of hours left after the 1st monument would be more than enough time to drive over to the other one for that quick visit and back to the road.
