How to travel in Portugal

I am starting to make arrangements on traveling to Portugal and Madrid on January 2008. I am confused with the availability to fly into FAO (I believed this is in FARO) Iberia has Lisbon as a destination/airport it serves but no FAO. The timeshare where I am staying is in the city of Lagoa and the timeshare information recommends to fly into Faro airport. Anyone with ideas as to what would be the most convenient way to get to my destination? Should I fly into Lisbon or Lisboa and go by rail? Take a commuter airplane from Lisbon airport to Faro airport, Bus, etc. Can anyone help? Comments and suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you,

Rekon

The cheapest way is to catch a bus, but the best way is the train.

Hi!

Don't panic! You have been hit by code-sharing hell!

FAO is the ICAO code for Faro, the main international airport for teh Algarve, situated about sixty kms east of Faro.

You are quite right Iberia itself does not operate its own aircraft into Faro. It code share flights with TAP Air Portugal on the route Madrid (MAD) - Lisbon (LIS) - Faro (FAO).

If you are flying Iberia you best bet is to fly into Madrid Barajas (MAD) and then take the daily direct low-cost Ryanair flight from Madrid Barajas (MAD) to Faro (FAO). (Watch their baggage charges!)

From there you will need to take:

eiher:

1) Taxi to Lagoa

or

2) Private Transfer Shuttle to Lagoa

or

3) Pick up a rental car at the Airport and drive.

I mat be wrong but I suspect the time share you mention is not actually situated in Lagoa but in its environs. If I am right, you may need your own transport as local public transport is sporadic and taxis can be pricey and difficult to come by.

An alternative would be to fly into Lisbon, take a taxi to Gare de Oriente and then a RENEX long distance coach to Lagoa via Vale Paraiso. (+- 4 hours).

Note there is no train station in Lagoa! There nearest is at estombar but there are usually no taxis there. If you chose to come by train from Lisbon or Faro, you would be better continuing to Portimão and getting a cab from there.
