Portugal Itinerary Help - Cascais or Algarve

Hello,

I am trying to plan a 1 week holiday in Portugal for four 27 year old lads from Ireland.

We are thinking of combining a visit to Lisbon (probably 3 days) with a bit of time at a beach resort (probably 4 days). From reading through various forum posts it looks like we could spend our beach time somewhere like Cascais/Estoril close to Lisbon or somewhere like Albuferia in the Algarve. Which would you recommend?

We are ideally looking for somewhere with good nightlife but also with nice beaches/scenery and things to do during the day (maybe a nearby waterpark, watersports at the beach or a day trip somewhere interesting).

I appreciate that we would lose half a day travelling down from Lisbon to the Algarve but we don't mind this if the trip is worth it (we could fly home from Faro so wouldn't have to make the trip back to Lisbon). However if there is a resort area close to Lisbon that we will enjoy just as much we are happy to stay there.

Thanks in advance.

When?

Albufeira and Cascais are not similar, if you want a bar/party scene it's Albufeira.

OK - thanks for that. We plan to be in Portugal mid August. I take it there are no resorts like Albufeira on the coast near Lisbon? In that case we will probably head down to the Algarve for 4 days. For nightlife in Lisbon would you recommend trying to have our 3 days there at the weekend or would the bars still be busy mid week in August?

As mentioned Albuferia and Lisbon coast are very different. If you drove it would take about 2.5 hours from Lisbon to get to Albuferia - once out of Lisbon it is a very easy drive (however driving in Lisbon can be a bit crazy!) Or you could get the train to the Algarve which I've done before and was straight forward.

Alternatively what may work is to base yourself in the Algarve for the holiday and once there decide if you want to travel up to Lisbon for a couple of nights mid-stay. The Algarve is very busy in August as this is the main holiday time for the Portugese (in addition to other European nations). Lisbon being the capital and a major city is busy most of the time.

I would recommend Cascais we went there for the 1st time 3 years ago and we have been back twice a year ever since!! It is a great place to visit very laid back with lovely beaches. A promenade from Cascais to Estoril a 15 min walk with bars and restaurants all along the way there are nightclubs and plenty of bars. I would also recommend O'Luains pub not because its Irish but it is great craic. You also have direct access to Lisbon trains run every 20 min s or so from Cascais to Lisbon great nightlife in Lisbon especially around Barrio Alto try www.lisboa.com it will give you all the info you need. Cascais is quite popular with groups of lads because of the golfing and there is the Casino in Estoril. I would recommend it if its good enough for Jose Mourihino!!!! he has an apartment there. Another plus is it is very reasonable to eat and drink in Cascais as well. So have fun wherever you go. We are heading back end of August and cant wait.

Cheers for your help Frances from Dundalk! Cascais sounds really good now which has made our decision between Cascais and the Algarve even more difficult! We had already made our minds up on a few days in the Algarve though so think we'll probably stick with that and keep the coast around Lisbon for another holiday! We'll def get a day trip out to Cascais/Estoril/Sintra area when we're in Lisbon though. I've heard about the Barriio Altro area of Lisbon and it sounds like good craic - looking forward to it!
