Night Life in Terceira

I'm planning a trip with friends to Terceira in August 2005 and I'm wondering what the night life is like during this period? Are there clubs/discotecs on this island? Will I meet people my own age (25) with ease? All replies are welcome.

Hi! Don't worry. You'll have a great time! There are a number of cafe's that are open until the WEE hours of the morning. There was this one club last summer called The Wolfe. Sort of a rave/ hip-hop club. It's cool, i guess. It is inside a warhouse. No matter where you go, you'll definately find nice people. Enjoy!

Hi, I'm english and 23, but my boyfriend is from Angra in Terceira. Have been going on holiday there since August 2003. It is beautiful...very picturesque. The main club people go to is called Wolf, which is towards the centre of the island and i recommend you go for a boogie! Most people dont go out to clubs til around 1am at the earliest. ususally the idea is a late dinner, then out to a few bars then on to the clubs. As for meeting people, you will have no problems. Especially in august, as there is the festival of praia, filled with concerts and nice restaurants. Plus the americans come for the summer to be with their family at the air base, and the university students from the mainland come home around now.

One thing i would say is ~ Be prepared to have your body clock completely mixed up! I'm flying out this this Sunday and will be there for a month (august 22nd), so if you get stuck or you are finding it hard, you can always email me. I have a portuguese number if you really need some help.

I hope though you have a wonderful time....safe journeys.

Hello Mauiigirl,

How strange. I was born in Terceira too and came to the US when I was about 3 years. Difference is I am alot older than you and I have had the chance to go back to Terceira several times over the years.

Since the International prohibtion on whale hunting was implemented, many of the Azorean whale hunters became tour guides for whale watchers. I don't know what whale watching options you will have on Terceira but I do know that you could probably take a short flight or ferry over to the island of Pico where you will find many whale-watching excursions.

I have had the chance to go watch whales (again from Pico) and I advise that if you can arrange it, do so. It is a wonderful experience. First you will be surrounded by dozens of dolphins and then once you get out about 10 miles or so you will spot the whales (I saw Sperm Whales when I went). It is a fascinating thing to do...almost a spiritual experience when you get to see these magnificent creatures up close.

I know you will have a wonderful time.

Safe travels to you!

George

Thank you for your reply George. I'm leaving in a week and can bearly stand it; Im so excited. I was wondering if you had any info on prices? I can't seem to Get any info on the net. How long is the ferry ride, and how often does it leave from Terceira to Pico and back. I'm sorry one more question, do they allow cameras on the boat? Your responce and your time is much appreciated.

Abrigado,

Ana

Hello Ana,

I did the whale watching excursion a few years ago but my recollection was that the cost for me and my fiancee for the out and back (a total of four or five hours) was about $50 more or less with a tip. The fellow we went out with was very friendly and he had no problem with us taking photos and video. During the summer ferries run between most of the islands except for Corvo if I remember correctly. I used Grupo Sata airlines for my short hops between islands. I am going to give you two Internet sites that may be of help to you,

the first is the official site for the Azores with lots of info about all of the things you are asking about and the other is a whale watching tour company out of the UK but which runs its tours in the Azores:

Official Azores site:

http://www.drtacores.pt/index.php

Whale Watch Azores site:

http://www.whalewatchazores.com/

Undoubtable there are other whale watch tours and you will find one or two located in the Azores site above.

I think that you will be going to see the whales at a good time because I believe in August and September is the time of year they migrate through the waters close to the Azores so there should be a lot of them to see. I could be wrong about this migration timing but I'm certain some Cetacean specialist on this forum will know better then I when they whales move pass the Azores.

You're going to have a great time, Ana!

Safe travels.
