Ponta Delgada on a Sunday

Will be visiting on Sunday, May 8, 2011 on a cruise ship port call. What can we expect to find open in town including any restaurants or cafes?

Being a predominantly Catholic culture not very much is open on Sundays but there's still enough to make the city worthwhile. Most of the shops will be closed - there's a linens and embroidery store on the pedestrian street up from the Matriz [cathedral plaza] that is open and I'm sure more have joined in since I lived there. All the sidewalk cafes will be open [Central is the largest and best of them for sitting outside and people watching] - all serve pastries both sweet and savory as well as the locally brewed beer and alcohol. Some of the Restaurants are closed but there are places both inside the port complex and along the avenue that offer local cuisine. "Roberto" comes to mind - great food. On the Avenue just past the central plaza. And there are the gardens and parks, the streets and architecture, the churches and museums all of which will be more accessible since the city is virtually abandoned on Sunday a day for gathering indoors with family. Explore and enjoy.

There's also a big shopping mall (Parque Atlântico) where everithing will be open and downtown not so big but also open the Solmar Avenida center(one of the shops has tipical pottery).

One Port of call was Ponta Delgada during my transatlantic cruise. On a Sunday. Terrible. All shops were closed. What was the point of going. The mall, while open, was no better.
