Is it safe to walk for the Cruise Ship Port into town? How far a walk is it? Local bus if needed?

Ponta Delgada is very safe and I the ships are docked in a central area so you will be fine. Have a great ttime.

I would say it is no more than a 5 minute walk from port to the city.

I think that the closest will be Praia do Pópulo, but even so it will be 10-15 min by car. You know that the sand there is black?

no i didnt know the sand is black. thanks for your reply. there doest seem much info on the beaches there. do you know what public transport is like? also ive heard that you can see whales and dolphins, do you have any experience of this? any info welcome. thanks

I would suggest you to go by taxi, you're on a schedule don't risk it.

Yes, you can go on a boat tour to see whales and dolphins, I've done it a few years ago in S. Miguel and last year in Pico island. However it depends on the sea conditions because it's done in a kind of zodiac boat.
