1/2 day in Ponta Delgada

Ponta Delgada is a port of call on a cruise my husband and I will be taking in early March. We will be there for 5 hours. Any recommendations on what can reasonably be seen & done in that time frame? Is the Cathedral within walking distance of the port? What sort of weather can we expect?

There is an ATM right in the cruise ship terminal. Also as you leave the ternimal and enter up into the main Avenue turning left and into the city center you will see a block of hotels and tall buildings with many cafes and snackbars and restataurants that offer sidewalk seating. This is the Sol Mar Shopping Complex and there are ATMs in there as well - they are pretty much everywhere downtown. There are a few machines in the city that are used for doing account transactions, paying bills, buying checks and these are for people with local accounts - these are really banking machines and not ATMS. Look for the machines marked MULTIBANCO [MB] or the red Millennium Machines. You can use these to access your debit cards and credit cards as long as you have your four digit pin.

As for a nice cafe there are many, almost as many as there are ATMS. I highly recommend Colomeia right in that group of cafes and snackbars along the Avenue - they have an amazing selection of pastries, cakes, chocolates, all made fresh and locally, prices are very reasonable and the staff is very friendly. Just pick out what you want and they'll bring it to the table for you outside. Also in the Matriz there is the Cafe Central the very hub of the city dirtectly in front of the Mother Church. They have a few selections of local sweets but nothing like Colomeia - here it's more about people watching and relaxing. Remember that in most cafes you have to go inside and place your order at the counter. Runners may bring your stuff out to you but there aren't really waiters.

Hope you enjoy your visit.
