Lagos or alvor

Can't decide to stay in Lagos or alvor for our 2 week holiday in June. We like a nice hotel with many places to visit and explore. We are in our 50's but enjoy good food, drinks, and contemporary accommodation , and love to get out and about and see different places. Any ideas please?

Both places have lots of restaurants and bars offering good food and drinks. You will find plenty of contemporary accommodation in either resort. However, due to the difference in size you might find it easier now to find accommodation in Lagos (which is a much bigger town) rather than Alvor (a relatively small village) as most of the better places in Alvor will now be booked.

In both places, it is obvious that they have evolved into resorts rather than having been purpose-built. There's still quite a lot of character in both.

There is more to see in Lagos as it's a larger, more bustling place than Alvor but both places have a similar vibe and feel. They are both busy without being rowdy and are more family- and couple-orientated than places like the Albufeira 'strip' or Praia da Rocha.

Everywhere in Alvor is easily reachable on foot and it has a very laid-back and relaxed atmosphere. It still has a working fishing harbour. Lagos is much bigger and busier and has a myriad of small, cobbled streets to explore. It also has an impressive marina.

Both places have large, magnificent stretches of beach with Alvor also having a wooden boardwalk running alongside most of the beach and around the river estuary.

On our last three visits to Portugal we have stayed in Alvor (for one week followed by a second week in Carvoeiro) but this year are giving Lagos a try as we feel (hope) that there may be more to keep our 14-year old son interested/occupied.

Stay at the marina club hotel at the marina in Lagos, easy walk into town and beaches.

Train is close by.

Much more going on than Alvor, but do visit Alvor just next door

Also being a couple in our fifties would have to second all that has been said about Lagos lots to do and see around the town itself without ever having to go any further.I have been to Alvor and although it is a lovely resort I think there is just a bit more to do in Lagos.

THanks everyone for your advice.... Lagos it is!!!! Has anyone been to either the yellow Lagos media Praia hotel, Tivoli Lagos or Vila gale Lagos hotel. Would appreciate any feed back on these. Have looked also at the suggestion of the marina club hotel. Is it best to go b&b or half board . Thanks !!!!!!

I haven't stayed in any of the hotels you mention but would personally recommend that you go either B&B or self catering there are so many quality restaurants in Lagos it would seem a shame to be tied to one place.

Always Bed and breakfast, there are an abundance of restaurants and cafes at prices to suit everyones budget.

the marina club is in the best spot, right amongst the boats great views ,ask for a marina view..

The Tivoli is a nice typical portugese hotel ,the breakfast is excellent.

There is a pool ,and a shuttle service to the beach ,with a private pool and bar area on the beach.

Some of the rooms are tired and need a refurb, but there are some better rooms,it is rather large hotel, but you are virtually 3-5 min walk to the centre of town ,5-10 mins to the marina.

There are a couple of bars opp the hotel entrance

Trouble with the yellow hotel meia praia , its too far out of town ,and you will need to use taxis.

it is opposite the huge meia praia beach.
