Sao Rafael, Castelo, Gale......

Can anyone tell us a bit more about either Sao Rafael, Castelo or Gale....there isn't that much info about the actual places on the forum, the info is more about the beaches.

After returning from Luz in September, which we really liked, how do Sao Rafael, Castelo & Gale compare?

We like small resorts that have just a bit of something to do at night ie a stroll around a few shops/boutiques & dinner at a nice restaurant, maybe a small promanade to walk on?

Do either of these places have any of these features or are they simply a collection of villa's around the beaches with maybe a couple of restaurants & not much more?

Maybe someone could recommend somewhere that fits our requirements....must be closer to the Faro side of the Algarve as we want to drive east of Faro next visit.

Also a link to freemaps.net showing a map of the Gale area with other info , in pdf format and you need to zoom in to read it

Hope this helps.

The beaches, as you will see from the maps, are down at the bottom of steep little lanes. There is beach bar/restaurant on each one but no promenade or anything like that.

The area is mostly villas but there are a couple of large hotels and some smaller establishments.

There are plenty of decent restaurants and bars in the area but shops are few. There are a couple of medium sized supermarkets, some mini-markets, supply stores, estate agents etc but nothing really in the way of 'boutiques'.

Thanks for the information, it sounds pretty much as we suspected but will probably still go ahead & book.

The area from Albufeira to Gale is pretty much a stretch of beautiful cove beaches, surrounded by villas, restaurants and a few local shops. It is certainly not a 'resort' but nonetheless a beautiful unspoilt, quiet area perfect for exploring. The coastline is exquisite, and by being a little more adventurous, you can find some amazing secluded beaches. There are some lovely restaurants along this stretch too. I can't recommend it highly enough!!!

That's good to hear because we have gone ahead & booked the villa....the holiday isn't until next September (sniff) but the villa's get booked up quickly & we didn't want to miss out!

Thank you for taking the time to reply, most kind.

September is a great time to be there too as you'll be out of the main season and the beaches will therefore be even better. We are returning for the fifth time next April and I can't wait. Whereabouts is your villa?

It's at Sao Rafael.....walking distance to the beach. We will be having a look at the coatline east of Faro , travel towards the Spanish border, maybe in land a little too?

Although we loved Luz & saw a great deal of the coast up as far as Amaco we virtually never return to a place twice. Jeremy is a keen photographer & likes to photograph something different each trip. I would be quite happy re-visiting certain destinations but he's not keen so I don't push for it (sniff!).

Do you know Venice? We have just booked a week there in May so if you have any 'hot tips' please message.

Thank you for your useful comments/advice & you enjoy your trip in April....it must be nice if you continue to visit year after year.

I am also a keen photographer - your husband certainly won't be short of excellent subject matter! Inland, we love the area around Silves and up into the Monchique area, beautifully scenic. The coastline east of Faro is much quieter, I particularly like the stretch around Manta Rota. We have taken the ferry over to Spain in the past, which is an interesting day visit. Sorry, son't know Venice!
