Either. The strip is noisier and generally for a younger crowd. It's a half mile of bars, clubs and restaurants aimed squarely at British tourists.

The old town has masses of places very close together including several music bars etc plus cafés and bars for local people, not just tourists. There a few shops at the strip to speak of other than places selling tourist beach and summer stuff and cheap souvenirs. There is little more in the way of shops in old town to be honest, the big malls have done for many of them. There are a couple of nice shops for leather goods, cotton and lace having said that.

The beach in the old town area is right there, although most of the apartment hotels are a few minutes walk at the top of the various hills. The beach at the strip end is down at the bottom of a steep hill. All the beaches will be packed in August.

Check locations carefully as, for example, anything with 'Choro' in the name will be a mile or so from the beach.

Everywhere around here is hilly and you will be hard to put find anywhere that doesn't involve a stiff walk back up the hill after a night out or joining the queue for a taxi. Local buses run until 1130pm every night in summer but don't go around all the resort areas.

Thanks Cubsur

We are looking at Encosta da Orada or Parque da Corcovada, stayed near the strip a few years ago with the kids ,this year on our own not worried about hills not rushing on holiday.

Any reccomendations will be appreciated.

Thanks wolf7

Like Liverpoolman I would recommend Forte do Vale. Lovely new and spacious apartments in a good location within walking distance of both Old Town and the Strip. You have the best of both worlds. Theres a few nice restaurants almost on the doorstep of FDV and a couple of bars. SPAR supermarket and small bakery within minutes. Tourist train stops right at the entrance.

Taxi back from the Strip or Old Town around 4 euros. The reviews on TA are excellent for FDV.

Forte do Vale is a lovely apartment building, with perfect location between old and new towns. I would not think Parque do Corcovado is central at all, it's past the bullring and the strip, the opposite end of things from the old town altogether. Brisa Sol is another place within walking of both old townand the strip.

I can see Encosta da Orada from my window. It's about 10 minutes downhill walk into the old town, maybe a little bit longer coming back up the hill. It overlooks the marina. It's a fairly quiet area.

There are a couple of bars etc if you go out of the back door plus there are a couple of small mini-market type shops within a few minutes walk.

Forte do Vale is well thought of in these forums and other as is Brisa Sol.
