2nights/days in Alentejo

Hi all,

We will be driving from Albufeira coast (just driving by after exploring Vicentina, stopping in few smaller places/beaches for 1-2hrs) to Duoro valley (Pinhao area) over 2 days/nights.

Thought of staying 1 nt in Evora and 1 nt in Marvao. We would like to see/experience nature, historical, cultural sites. In other words - little of everything...

Would like to avoid trafic, crowds and would prefer picturesque roads.

What do you think? Do we have to stay in Evora or we can spend a night in some place else?

Thank you ,

P

Yes, do spend time in and around Evora, especially since you want to see the megalithic stites.

Have you already visited the www.visitalentejo.pt website? If you use the features you can look for a place to stay just outside Evora.

If you're heading to the Douro Valley after Évora stay a little bit north than Marvão. I LOVE Marvão, but it's a tiny village that you can visit on the way north. If your plan was to visit Alentejo then it would be a place to stay. Look at this website about the historical villages, Belmonte may be a nice place for the night www.aldeiashistoricasdeportugal.com/ahp.htm

Great suggestions!

Yes, we would like to see Alenteho on our way to Duoro...

We are torn though between staying the first night in Mertola, visit Evora on the next day and drive to Marvao and spend a night there...

What do you think? Too much driving in one day?

Thanks,

P

It's a similar situation, Mértola is very nice but is a small town, easy to reach coming from the Algarve and not long to visit. So it can done on the way to Évora. Évora has much more to offer (both in the city and surroundings) so a night there makes much more sense (I think). If you had another night to spend in Alentejo before heading to the Douro then a night at Marvão would make perfect sense (because you would have time to visit other places on the way), since you don't have go to Marvão, visit and spend the night further north.

Yes, drive from Albufeira to Vila Real de Santo António at the far east side of the Algarve.

From there up north to Alcoutim and Mértola. Visit the town and continue to Evora to stay the night. http://goo.gl/maps/PM9kz for a scenic drive with no tolls (from Altura on you can use the highway, it's toll free).

From Mertola to Evora is only 1h40 http://goo.gl/maps/kYaQi

The next day to Marvão won't be that much driving (2 hrs) so you have more time to see the surroundings.

Excellent. That's what I am going to do.

Have already booked 1 nt in Evora and one in Marvao - will keep my reservations then.

Thank you,

One more question,

What about Serpa? Is it worth a visit if we have time? I've read they have good local cheeses.

What do you think?

Or it's going to be too much?

Thanks,

It's nice and indeed there are cheeses from Serpa. It's quite an old Moorish town with remains of a castle and there's a church which has a small cloister.

Driving via Serpa would take about 35 min. longer. Why don't you keep it in the back of your mind. If you have enough time left when you're leaving Mertola, you could decide?

Thank you FTHW.

I know it's a tough question but between Mertola and Serpa - which one would you choose?

Thanks,

Mértola, no doubt.
