Walking holiday Portugal

We are keen walkers and thinking of doing a four night break late September. We are looking for an area with some good circular walks with great views! We will hire a car and be happy with walks up to about 10k. Any ideas?

Hi Sonia,

Are you looking to do a self guided tour or to go with a company? I guess it's selfguided...

If you were looking for ideas maybe browse through this site:

The 300km long "Via Algarviana" is fantastic too, but it's not circular although you can do a different sector a day and then taxi back. I did Sector 6 in the middle of winter --> outdoorsinportugal.com/via-algarviana-hiking…

Where will you fly to? If you would fly to the Algarve/Faro there are two booklets which I would recommend.

You could combine the two. Have a further look on the www.visitalgarve.pt website

Under the 'downloads' section you will find maps, brochures and more ebooklets.

Here is the online version of an excellent magazine specialising in walking trails (it has an english version!) that I subscribe to. Not sure if previous issues are available and free online, but you can try. They organize their trails around a theme (e.g. lighthouses), and most of their trails are circular. I've used several of their recommendations, which come with info on points of interest, some historical background where applicable, and I've never been disappointed. There is a very good description of the trail, the slopes, and the level of walking fitness necessary. It's geared towards easy to moderate types of walks, and average around 10 km. Have a look.

If you want to do self-guided (with the trails on a GPS as support) and be in an area with a lot to offer in terms of trails, nature and close to important towns on Portuguese history (Tomar, Batalha, Alcobaça), look at http://www.casadosmatos.com/
