The Belgian Coast.

We will be staying in Ieper this summer and have been told that it would be interesting to explore the Belgian Coast by tram. What is the extent of the tram system and are there any one day travel tickets. Where would be the nearest point from Ieper where we could join a tram?.

Hi !

Unless you have your own car it's rather difficult to get to the coast from Ieper; There's no train to get there but you can take the bus to Veurne ( about 5 km from the coastline ) and change busses there to the seaside towns of De Panne or Koksijde ( about 5 km from Veurne ) ; Ostend is also an option but that's again 20 km further and a rather big city.

So , once in Veurne ( the market place is also worth a visit ! ) you have to consider what to choose :

The tranquility of the dunes and beaches with great 'national' parcs in De Panne and Koksijde or the (rather seedy ) city of Ostend...

In De Panne or Koksijde you can take the coastal tram to Ostend ( takes 1 hour ). In Ostend you have to change again to take a ride to Knokke Heist ( again about 1 hour )...

The bus ride from Yper to Veurne takes about 45 min. ( 35 km ).

I would rather recommend to visit one or two coastal towns than to ride a lot with the ( in summer often overcrowded tram ... it's not realy a sightseeing tour too... )

greetings,

Duke
