NEW YEAR'S EVE BRUGES - TRIP REPORT

We arrived in Bruges on 30th Dec, and spent a couple of hours looking around the city. Luckily we went in Sint Salvators Cathedral, as it was closed for the rest of our visit.

On New Years Eve we noticed that most of the museums were closing at 4pm, and the Belfort stopped issuing tickets at 3.15pm.

We knew that many restaurants were only offering a set NYE menu, so we had decided to just eat snacks around the market in the early evening. At 4pm we noticed the market starting to shut up, so we changed our plan and had some sausages & bread, from a stall, which closed soon after we had bought our food.

Walking back to our hotel we tried to buy some wine, but most of the supermarkets were closing and wouldn't let us in. We eventually found a small shop for some wine.

We went back out at about seven and found the city deserted. Back in the Markt there was one stall selling drinks. We stopped there for a while and chatted to the other customers, and then returned to our hotel, which luckily was nearby.

At 10.30pm we walked to T'Zand and joined around 15,000 people for a lovely singalong. There was a great atmosphere, and although crowded it wasn't overwhelming. People were drinking, not getting drunk. Many of the songs were in English, and everyone joined in. There was also Zorba's dance, and a few conga's. At midnight they played Abba, Happy New Year, and everyone turned round to watch the fireworks. The singing continued until 1.30pm.

There were a few drinks stalls, although very little food, most people had brought their own drink.

It was a lovely, slightly different way to welcome in the New Year, and everyone was very friendly. It's something I would do again, but next time I would eat a proper meal at lunchtime.

Christmas In Bruges :)

We hope you find this helpful if you are thinking of spending next Christmas in Bruges :)

Arrived in Bruges after a fairly comfortable crossing with P&O Hull/Zeebrugge ferry Pride of Bruges , Mobility Bus waiting for us at the port , loaded the scooter , cases and presents and off to the Ibis Centrum where we were greeted warmly and by name from the receptionist ,Liesbeth ( Flemish spelling of the Boss`s name ) room was ready in 1/2 hour of arrival , disability room 224 , plenty of room with a roll-in bathroom fitted with shower seat , very handy !

The room was spotless , warm and the bed , as ever now , very very very comfortable :)

unpacked then off into town to catch up with our Belgian friends and to deliver 2 large Pork Pies which they had never had before ! checked if the Westhoek cheese shop would be open on the Friday we left Bruges so we could take back our favourite cheese, pate and delicacies , pleased to find he would be open !

Weather was cold and drizzly rain was a problem in the stiff breeze for most of the day but hey it`s Xmas :) in the afternoon we met Len & Debbie from the USA on their first visit to Bruges and introduced them to some Belgian beers including , Westmalle Double , Straf Hendrick and a Cheery beer by Lindemanns , all enjoyed and noted for future consumption :) we arranged to meet at the Markt on Xmas Day as neither of us had a booking for lunch or dinner , we ate in the hotel that night with some very tasty Leg of Lamb with a Herb Sauce washed down with some beers , coffee & Cognac for afters then off for a good nights sleep !

Christmas Eve: We awoke to a fine sunny day with no wind , excellent ! off to town again this time with the Boss having shopping on her mind , spent a leisurely morning shopping with C&A`s high on the list !

Lunch was had at Hema where our favourite , Pea & Ham Soup was on the menu and as always very tasty ! had some Apple Pie for afters with a couple of Latte`s € 14 ! how cheap is that for Bruges ? no wonder it is packed at lunch with the locals :)

Then we delivered the Christmas Presents to our Belgian friends and arranged to dine with them on Boxing Day night which we looked forward to immensely .

Then back to the hotel for a nap ( us old `un`s you know ) before our dining that night at Pro Deo ( see report ) what a night and we did not need much time when our heads hit the pillows after our return to the Ibis with a couple of Coffees & Cognacs to help us along the way to dreamland :)

Christmas Day: We awoke , always a good sign at our age :) , to a glorious sunny day again ! nipped over to the Carrefour supermarket for our morning Pastries to go with our breakfast tea & coffee courtesy of our travel kettle which is worth its weight in gold ! so good and fresh it starts the morning off superbly !

Around 10-40 we made our way to the Markt & the Burg and saw a few dozen people around which , in the UK , would be a crowd , listened to the bells chiming and then returned to the Ibis , showers and a shave ( for Me not the Boss ) change of clothing and at 1pm we were back at the Markt ! It was PACKED !!! there was 100`s of folks enjoying the Ice Rink and the Christmas Stalls around the square especially the Food & Drink Stalls , eventually met with Len & Debbie and we all enjoyed some great food off the stalls including one of our favourites , Tartifillete ( spelling ? ) Hot , Tasty & Filling and ideal on a Cold Christmas lunch time ! rinsed down with some Gleuwine (?) Len & Debbie told us of their visits to various parts of the city including our fav pub , the Lindenhof on `t Zand , sounded like they had an excellent night :) they then went on to explore more of the city and we returned to the Ibis where we spent the evening playing Thai Dominos , they are triangular and can make you pull out your hair sometimes but great fun with a lot of interest shown by fellow guests , the hotel being fully booked , with people still checking in late into xmas night ! finished the night off with our usual Coffee & Cognac`s then off to dreamland once again having enjoyed Christmas Day in Bruges with many a fond memory of the day !

Boxing Day : Woke again to a glorious sunny , cold day ! after breakfast we made our way into town again and were surprised to find most of the shops open and with sales on at up to 50% off , the Boss was off and running like a racing driver into the stores and left me with loads of bags of shopping while she carried on ! think P&O would be charging us Commercial rate going home ! lol ! where for luch ? Hema ! Chicken Noodle soup today and chocolate cake for afters Mmmmmm !

We met our Belgian friends who said they were very sorry but the restaurant where we had been booked into had to close but that we would be dining at Pro Deo instead ! :) No Problem !! we spent another excellent night dining with our friends and exchanged Xmas Gifts while there .

So another day passed and another nights sleep awaited us and , you guessed it , Coffee & Cognacs back at the hotel propelled us on our way :)

Last Day : Awoke to Rain , Cloud & Strong Winds ! what a change from the two previous days ! needless to say there would be not a lot of tripping around town today but no problem with a late check out arranged for us by the Ibis staff who we must say had been brilliant throughout our stay with smile , friendly greetings and a willingness to help with any problems that arose , well done to all at the Ibis !

Leaving the Boss ensconced in the bar I kitted out for winter wear and made the final shopping trips , Cheese shop Windhoek , Chocolates. Old Chocolate House , Olsiboles , Market stall , St Stevensplien and last , but not least , Cherry Beer for the Boss from the Beer Shop opposite the Ibis ! Done !

So now it`s time to leave Bruges for the UK , bad forecast and not looking forward to our return crossing , Mobility Bus arrived on time and ready to transport us back to Zeebrugge , Goodbye Bruges ! see you in 2014 in the Spring :)

Much to our surprise & delight the crossing was very good with no bad seas to deal with and we arrived home safe and well and rested from our crossing :)

How do we summarise this visit to Bruges at Christmas ..................................................

Brilliant !!

hi All

Just visited Bruges with wife and two kids age 5 and 7 years on our P&O Azura cruise recently. Beautiful place to visit, even the kids loved the buildings and canals. Just to mention that we did not take the cruise operated shore excursion and planned our own and thanks to Sabrina and other reviewers we found the information provided very helpful. The good thing about P&O was that their courtesy buses took us to Blankenberge(about 100 yards from train station)from where there is hourly train to Bruges costing euro 6 return per adult--duration about 12 minutes. The only gripe is that train is not well marked on return from Bruges and a lot of fellow passengers were quite confused if they were in the right train. There was no rail official to provide any confirmation about the train. This may be something the Belgian rail may like to look into.We walked to the town centre which was pretty straight forward but with kids took us about 25 minutes of reach there. To find the tourist office was very easy in Blankenberg and we collected Bruges map from there. We took the horse carriage ride which cost us euro 39 for the whole trip lasting about 30 minutes and was worth it as coachman knew good English and provided excellent commentary. The boat tours was good but seemed like a repetition of the hoarse carriage ride, so for us,it did not add much more really. The money we saved by not taking the cruise arranged Bruges excursion helped us to buy loads of chocolates which we are still enjoying.Overall, a beautiful place to visit and we were much better off by not buying highly priced cruise arranged excursion tour to visit Bruges. Thanks
