Day trip from Bruges to Ghent

DH and I will be spending three days and two nights in Bruges in September. we would like to take a day trip to Ghent to see the castle and any other attractions that will fit into a day.

Is this easily doable? Is Ghent from train station walkable? Does anyone have a recommendation for things to do? We love to take photos, visit churches, art, tour museums and taste different cuisines.

I did a day trip from Bruges to Ghent a few years ago. We took the train to reach Ghent. Can't really recall if we walked to the center but I think we took a tram. From the center, we took a horse carriage which took us all around the city.

The train takes less than 30 mins from Brugge to Gent St. Pieters and yes you will need to take a tram: it takes at least 40 minutes to walk, and isn't worth it. On arrival in Ghent, go out of the front of the station and look for stand 2, for tram #1 direction Wondelgem/Evergem.

As the tram operator is the same as the bus operator in Brugge, you can already buy tickets or multi-trip card ("Lijnkaart") in Brugge from the De Lijn office outside the station, otherwise you can buy them from machines near the tram stops (€1.30 for single ticket) or from the tram driver (when the same ticket will cost €2).

The centre is around Korenmarkt, which is the stop for Graslei where the canal boats go from; however the tram will also bring you, a couple of stops further on, to Gravensteen for the castle, see transport map on delijn-ovl.be/pdf/lijningent/Belangrijkste_b… (line 1 is the red one, both St. Pieters station and Korenmarkt are highlighted in yellow).
