Ghent and New Year

Hi. Looking for somewhere different for New Years eve. We have been there before and really enjoyed it back in early December 2008.

some questions

1. Are things open on New Years eve? Not just the bars but somewhere to eat. Does anything happen at midnight?

2. We've heard that there is a lot of construction going on and to avoid until 2012. Is this right?

3. Would Brussels be better?

2) One square is under construction.

I think every living city has always one of it's squares under construction.

On NYE, restaurants everywhere in Belgium are virtually all serving expensive fixed-price, multi-course menus (réveillon de nouvel an, St. Sylvestre), so unless eating in your hotel, you would have to book a restaurant in advance: although you wouldn't starve, you can generally eat in bars and cafés. However, bars may be somewhat busy, obviously some of them have parties.

In Brussels, the fireworks are set off from the Mont des Arts (below Place Royale), and can be viewed from the Albertine Gardens or indeed the Grand' Place (or if you have a room on the city side, from somewhere like the Brussels Hotel, that is the former Brussels Hilton); or anywhere, really. If you go to the GP, beware of silly youths letting off firecrackers.

The square that is under reconstruction in Brussels is Place Rogier! To be borne in mind if you were considering staying at the Sheraton, Brussels City Hilton, or Crowne Plaza.
