A day in Brussels by train between Paris and Amsterdam?

We are traveling from Paris to Amsterdam but thought we'd get off the train and take a quick visit of Brussels.

Is this achievable? Just to see the main square, perhaps take a tour (bus or walking)?

Has anyone done this WITH LUGGAGE? How does one go about this issue?

I imagine it is very cumbersome to just do a day trip but we are pressed for time.

Thank you.

You can buy a Thalys ticket Amsterdam-Brussels and another for Brussels-Paris - you have to buy separate tickets as you want to take 2 different trains and Thalys is reservation-only.

Thalys only stops at Bruxelles-Midi so you can leave your luggage in lockers there, or at the staffed left-luggage office, both of which are next to the Thalys platforms (when you come down into the main concourse).

After leaving your luggage, your Amsterdam-Brussels ticket permits you to take the next convenient train to Bruxelles-CENTRAL station, just look on the departure board, monitors or yellow timetable "boards" to see which one to take, from which platform. Bruxelles-central is 5 minutes' walk from the Grand' Place and also close to the cathedral, Galeries St. Hubert, Mannekin Pis etc.

When you are ready to return to Bruxelles-Midi for your train to Paris, your Brussels-Paris ticket permits you to start at Gare centrale to connect with Thalys at Midi. Again, trains run every few minutes in that direction (and take 3 minutes). Obviously you need to time your return so as to have time to recover your luggage from the lockers/left-luggage office and find your train to Paris.

Thalys trains use platforms 3, 4, 5 and 6. The lockers etc. are near the entrance to platform 6.

Sorry just realised you are travelling in the opposite direction, but the same principles apply: just invert everything!

Are the lockers safe from thieves, etc? Thanks.

I don't know how people could get into the lockers, but if you don't trust them, use the staffed facility. And if you don't trust THAT, I guess you'll have to give up the idea of stopping in Brussels, unless you want to drag your bags around with you all day!
