How long should we plan for customs at Brussels airport?

We are arriving in Brussels from Philadelphia on US Airways at 8:06am. We are going to Paris straight from the airport, and would like to take the direct connection that leaves Brussels airport at 9:48am. Is this enough time for us to collect our baggage, make it through customs, and walk to the airport train station?

I would guess that as long as your plane arrives on time and lines at passport control are not too long, 1h42 minutes ought to be enough to get from the plane to the train, but of course there are no guarantees.

It's not customs that takes the time - it only takes 2 minutes to walk through the green channel after collecting your baggage: it's first walking a long way from the arrival gate to passport control, then possible lines at passport control, then the wait for baggage delivery.

Actually, compared to some other airports, the distances at BRU aren't that long. And the waiting lines are for passport control for non-residents are usually pleasantly short compared to the average US airport or a place like LHR. But it's a bit of a lottery: if you arrive immediately after one or two African flights you might be stuck for a while. Even so, in most cases if your plane is at the gate at 8.15am you can be outside customs by 9.15. The train station is 50 metres (and two levels down) from there.

Can't you buy some type of flexible ticket for the Thalys? There are plenty of trains from Brussel Midi that you can catch if you miss this one...

if you haven't bought your tickets for the Thalys, you may want to ask for the thalys card, this gives you some flexibility for free : a semi-flex ticket will allow you to travel one train before or one train after.

so first apply for Thalys card - it is free - once you have the card (or its reference) you buy your tickets in semi-flex for at least one train later. it then gives you a flexibility of 3 train within one hour...

not sure they send thalyscard to US - you'll have to check. Also having the card allows you to travel without your ticket (but print it nevertheless just in case).
