Hi all,

I would love a recommendation in Brussels for the following:

- Best waffles

- Best mussels

We will only be there for 24 hours and really are going just for the food. We are staying at the

Hotel Sofitel Brussels Le Louise, Brussels.

Discussing where to get the best mussels in Brussel is like discussing where to get the best pastrami in New York. (Sorry, couldn't think of an example for Chicago... :-) Everyone has a personal preference, but my choice these days is a very low key restaurant (not even specialised in sea food, more like a snack bar) in the St.Catherine area (behind the Grand Place from your hotel), called restaurant de la Bourse. But if you are there for one day only you should go for something a bit more typical I think... A place like 't Kelderke on Grand Place or 't Spinnekopke (both serving typical Belgian food).

And on waffles: I was born in Belgium and lived there for almost 30 years, but I am still trying to understand what exactly tourists are looking for when they want "Belgian waffles". The stuff they sell on the streets in Brussel is definitely not what I grew up with. So, sorry, can't help you with that.

In my opinion the best waffles in Brussels are to be had at Dandoy's upstairs café, in rue C. Buls (the street leading from the Grand' Place to the Mannekin Pis), almost opposite the Amigo Hotel. It used to be the only place that prepared them fresh, although in high season apparently they too use pre-prepared ones now. You can sample both the Brussels and the Liège variety there.

As you are from America, you might need to know that waffles (like pancakes) are not eaten for breakfast in Belgium: unless perhaps this is as part of a hotel buffet breakfast, designed for Americans!

I confirm. Best waffles are at Dandoy's. they also sell Speculoos - be sure to try it too.

Mussels, long time no been but Leon was at a time an institution. I fear it has become some of a tourist trap, but on the other hand last time I went mussels were still ok and it is in the dead center of Brussels (about 200 m from Dandoy, just opposite when you go to the grand place).
