Best area for hotels/hostels?

I'm looking at a 4-day stop in Brussels in December. I will likely be traveling by myself and am looking for some place that is safe/clean but not luxuirous. Close to town centre or easy access on public transport. Any suggestions on what area of the city I should be looking at when checking out hotel reviews/rates?

1. Re: Best area for hotels/hostels?

Postcode 1000 (Bruxelles-Ville, the most central commune) and within that, the area near Gare centrale would be the most convenient, I believe the cheapest hotels would be the Moon Hotel, Madeleine, St. Michel; you could also look at the Floris Arlequin, Aris Grand' Place (or Centre), Opéra... There are also cheaper hotels near the metro stop Anneessens. If you look at "Brussels hotels" on the left of this page, you can arrange these in price order.

Closest hostels are www.2GO4.be on Bd. E. Jacqmain off Place de Brouckère (1 metro stop from Gare centrale) or the Bruegel in rue St. Esprit about 10 mins walk from Gare centrale and close to the Sablon.
