Attend a Church Mass/Service

We will be in Antwerp at the end of May and would like to attend a church service at any of the churches. I plan to tour Carolus Borromeus, St. Pauls and St. James, but did not find any info online about attending a service.

You can attend church services at any church you please, but if you want this to be in English see http://www.abiw.org/religion.htm - your hotel should also be able to provide service times and addresses for local churches.

Mass takes place on Sundays at Carolus Borromeuskerk at 11:30 (http://www.mkaweb.be/site/english/062.mv), Sint-Pauluskerk at 10:30 (http://www.mkaweb.be/site/english/026.html) and Sint-Jakobskerk at 9 and 10 (http://www.mkaweb.be/site/english/038.mv).

Thank you for your reply.

We will be in Antwerp on a Tuesday and Wednesday.

It appears that St. James Church has mass at 11:00 and Praising on Tuesday at 10:30. Is this correct?

The service does not have to be in English.

Although the internet is a great thing, it would be wise to swing by the gate of the churchyard and check the postings when you get there. One thing to consider is whether some of the churches you want to see might be hard to see without going to a service. Antwerp is famous for its churches and the (massive) Cathedral. But one time I was there I wanted to see the tomb of Peter Paul Rubens. But (at that time, several years ago) there were almost no open tourist hours at St. Jakobskerk (while virtually everyone you meet in Antwerp will speak English, I don't recommend you ask for directions to St. James' church!!) So I went to a service. The gas heaters on stands made very little impact on the winter cold, so I kept my coat on.

With the addition of the Cathedral, you have mentioned the top churches in town. If it is concert season in May, the AMUZ concert hall is a deconsecrated church of some charm. Be aware that many of the big-name paintings in these un-climate controlled churches, with non-museum-class burglar alarms, are replicas. Or, a long-ago Holy Roman Empress took the paintings to her palace! Although there is still much authentic to see, note that both St. Paul's and the Jesuit church have had serious fires in modern times. They have both been fully restored.
