Staying in Antwerp and wanting to go to Brugge and Ghent

We have a weekend in Antwerp and would like to visit Ghent and Brugge. It seems from the map that Ghent is closer to Antwerp than Brugge.

What is the best way to get to these places from Antwerp? What is your recommended route? Ghent first before Brugge? How? We hope to see these 2 places on the Saturday.

The only way to get to these places from Antwerp by public transport is by train, and the train to Brugge goes through (and you sometimes have to change trains at) Ghent (and some departures would involve changing in Brussels, but you would want to avoid those). It takes 1h24-1h55 on direct trains from Antwerpen-Centraal to Brugge.

Personally I think both cities are worth a day of anyone's time, so I would not recommend "seeing" both on the same day, but if you do, it is entirely up to you whether you choose to stop off in Ghent on the way to, or back from, Brugge. In similar circumstances I would choose to do the furthest place first, but this is not something on which anyone else's opinion would seem very meaningful.

For the cost, it would have been nice to know when this trip was to take place, as there is currently a "web deal" in place which would permit you to travel Antwerp-Ghent-Brugge-Antwerp or Antwerp-Brugge-Ghent-Antwerp for €15 - but the last day on which this applies is 3 November. It would require 3 tickets, as is also true using standard single tickets:

Antwerp-Brugge : €14.50 (weekend return, €15.40)

Brugge-Gent St. Pieters: €6.30 (weekend return €7.40)

GSP-Antwerp : €9.20 (weekend return, €10.20)

Brugge-Antwerp VIA Ghent/ Antwerp-Brugge VIA Ghent: €15.50 (same as €6.30 + €9.20)

Thus if travelling Antwerp-Brugge-Ghent-Antwerp on a SATURDAY, you can either use

- 1 single ticket Antwerp-Brugge (€14.50) plus VIA ticket (or 2 separate tickets) Brugge-Ghent-Antwerp (€15.50) = €30; or

- Back-to-back weekend return tickets Antwerp-Ghent-Antwerp (€10.20) plus Ghent-Brugge-Ghent (€7.40) = €17.60

What you can't do is interrupt your journey on either a normal single (A-B, B-A) or return (ABBA) ticket, as you are travelling ABCA. Or, using back-to back tickets, AB(BCCB)BA - btw you don't have to get off at B in the direction in which you aren't interrupting your journey, just present the right bit of the right ticket on the right leg (although the ticket inspector may of course also ask to see the bit relating to the other leg).

For timetables you may find it easiest to use http://www.railtime.be/website/train-schedule although for purchase - apart from web deals, it makes no difference to the price whether you purchase in advance or on the day of travel, online or at the station - you would have to use www.belgianrail.be

P.S. I thought this question sounded familiar but couldn't place it. It turns out that this is because it was YOU who asked much the same question, and have therefore already received this information, 2 WEEKS AGO! tripadvisor.com/…53437495
