4 days in Belgium -should it be Antwerp or Brussels ?

Thanks in advance for any advice. We well have about a 4 days to spend in Belgium as part of a 15 day trip in May. We arrive in Amsterdam and depart from Paris and will spend 4-5 days in each of those cities. Which will leave us with about 4 days to spend in Belgium.

We plan on traveling by train between cities and were wondering if it would be better to use Antwerp or Brussels as a base for our time in Belgium. It seems that they are only about an hour apart by train, so we could explore both cities and make day trips from either one. We are leaning towards Antwerp but not sure.'

Here are the questions.

1. From Amsterdam is it easier to get to Antwerp or Brussels and is there direct service to both without changing trains.

2. In terms of ultimately getting to Paris is it easier to do so from Antwerp or Brussels?

3. We are leaning towards using Antwerp as a base for all of our time in Belgium and realistically should we just spend our time there rather than trying to see to much time traveling around. In other words, is 4 or 5 days in Antwerp too much.

4. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks again.

1. Antwerp - purely because it is closer to Amsterdam, it's the same train - and yes, as long as you stick to high-speed trains, that is Thalys or Fyra. With non-high-speed trains it is unfortunately now - since Dec. 2012 - necessary to change in Rotterdam and Roosendaal.

2. Brussels - purely because it is closer to Paris (1h22), and there are also extra trains from Bruxelles-Midi in addition to those coming in from Amsterdam/Antwerp. From Brussels, Thalys departs to Paris almost every 30 mins, although I noted that there are some curious gaps in the schedule when this sends you by TGV/Eurostar to Lille then TGV to Paris-Nord. However, there are hourly (33 mins past each hour on weekdays) direct Thalys services from Antwerpen-Central to Paris-Nord, which call at Brussels on the way and take only 2h02, so the advantage is minor.

3. It wouldn't be for me, but if you find it so, there is nothing to stop you visiting e.g. Lier, Ghent, Brugge from Antwerp : although it is 1h24 (and €28.20 standard return, €15 weekend return) to Brugge, which is the furthest of these, compared with 1 hr (€27 standard return, €14.40 weekend return) from Brussels.
