1 + 1 day in AMS - how does this look as a plan....

Hi

Myself and wife (54, 48) arrive Schiphol Sep 01 730am by a Delta flight from NewYork. We will be staying the night at Ibis Budget next to the airport for the night, before taking an early morning flight next day to Prague. We return around 10am the following Sat Sep 06 and will once again stay at the same hotel for the night. We take the flight back to Mumbai on Sun Sep 07.

So we are in Amsterdam for 2 days - but separate days.

Our plan for Sep 01:

Leave hotel around 11am after leaving our bags - take bus 197 or the hotel free shuttle to city - and straight to Riksmuseum, followed by a canal tour. Evening at De Wallen and back to hotel by midnight.

Our plan for Sep 06:

Leave hotel around 11am after leaving our bags and once again go to the city. Since this is our last day of our vacation, we are looking at shopping - dutch souvenirs, chocolates, select bakery items, etc for the folks back home. Any advice on shops will be welcome...

Also - on this last day - we will just chill and relax - no sightseeing really. Where should we head for - preferably an area where we can also do most of our shopping as above..? Will want to be back in the hotel by midnight.

Any advice / comments will be highly appreciated !

Thx

What is the departure time for your flight towards Prague?

If your flight is not very early you might wanna consider staying in the city instead of staying at the boring surroundings of the airport. Take a little nap, enjoy a shower without having to go back to the airport.

I'd say spend the last day relaxing in Amsterdam only, and do your shopping at Schiphol airport. They sell all the same souvenirs too. That would save you some dragging around with bags. ;-)

As for that first day, I can think of nicer things to fill an evening with than just De Wallen. Don't stick to that cheesy neon-lit area only, but also wander the rest of the canals with their more subtly lit bridges and less drunken tourists.... the city can look like a fairytale in the evenings.

Or for example you could go up to the SkyLounge Bar on the 11th floor of DoubleTree hotel (next to Central Station, not far from De Wallen), which gives you amazing views of the city.

Thanks friends - this is most helpful.

Cecilia - your earlier tips on my earlier posts were equally helpful - the suggestion of going to the sky lounge bar is excellent!

Thx
