1. Re: euros

Sue, if I understand you correctly, you are asking about the Euro:Sterling exchange rate because your grandson is wondering if he should buy Euros here or in Manchester before he travels.

My advice would be not to buy Euros before he travels (unless he's very nervous about being stuck and wants €50 in his pocket as security). In the arrivals hall in Schiphol he will find ATMs which will accept UK debit cards and he can withdraw cash from them safely and at a reasonable exchange rate. The banks tend to charge a per-transaction fee for this, so it makes sense to withdraw more money fewer times (rather than making a lot of small withdrawals during his stay).

And if he does decide to wait Potts on the Damrak or Lorentz on the Damstraat offer the best rates in town. Potts in currently exchanging at 1.20.

Balou €1.20 is the rate you pay to buy Sterling (the IBEX is 1.17 so it can't be any mor than that or they would lose money). They are giving €1.13 per GBP.

€1.15 is a very good rate.

4. Re: euros

getting euros out of a cash machine abroad if you are British is only good if you have a bank account that charges you no fee - most of them charge a fee that is worse than the exchange rate you can get.
