Top 5 'Must Do's' whilst in Amsterdam?

OK, first time to the 'Dam' and am going in two couples. Had a glance at a couple of guide books but experience with trip advisor tells me you people know better.

So, I would really appreciate your top 5 things to do, places to go/see.

Cheers

I suppose that depends how "young" you are.

Most 20-year olds coming here appear to have a top 5 that goes something like this:

* Get stoned

* Go clubbing

* Get stoned

* Get even more stoned

* Pass out.

A wee older and you may start seeing this on the list such as:

* Take a boat tour

* Rent a bike to visit canals

* One of the museums (The Van Gogh, or the Rijks with Rembrandt/Vermeer etc)

* Take a trip to the polders surrounding the town..

It's up to you really. The nice thing about this city is you're free...

* One of the boat tours on the canals gives a great overview of the city.

* In good weather: sitting in one of the great squares or by almost any canal and having a coffee or meal and just people watching.

* Any/all of the great museums.

* Dam Square.

* In season: the Keukenhof and bulb fields.

So many choices: hope you are there at least a week.

My Top 5: (from an OLD man, way past 20)

Van Gogh Museum

RedLight District

VondelPark

Walk or Bike

Get Stoned

Eat Indonesian

OK--6

Amsterdam is one of the truly unique cities in the world. The Architecture alone is worth a visit...walking through the city, fairly aimlessly, is one of the best travel experiences available...Rely on serendipity....

Walk a lot. Avoid the red light district area. It's really dodgy, full of sleaze bags and the if your bird is fit the pimps, the dealers etc.. might think your bird is a hooker. Keep away from there unless your a real perv.

Take mushrooms.

Visit the Rembramptplein and Leidersplein. Too cracking areas full of bars, restaurants, clubs, coffee shops. Top drawer too.

Watch lots of porn.

Get stoned.

Go to Supperclub on (near Dam Square ) jonge vangalenstraat (straat = street, plein = square). Expensive but worth it www.supperclub.nl

Make sure you try and learn Dutch phrazes - they go a long way. Dank u wel (vel) - thank you. Dutch people will give you more respect if you use them.

Have fun.

P.S. Don't agree on the serendipty principle. A lot of people in Amsterdam are very weird. Travel around Holland to get that kind of experience.

Clearly, Markrandom has a different view point of Amsterdam...

I fully recommend the RedLight District. It's heavily patrolled by Amsterdam Police and heavily frequented by tourists. My wife and I found a stroll through the district around sunset to be just perfectly urban....The Neon beginning to take hold while the sky darkens...just sublime. Coffeeshop Styx is just beyond the Waag...a very nice little shop...

Amsterdam is not a dangerous city...but it is a city and there are strange characters...Isn't that part of the process of travel? Serendipity is essential to my travels...openness makes everything better.

I don't have any particular recommendations for Indonesian...but a Rijstaffel is the perfect choice for 4...
