Best time places to see tulips

This will be our second trip to Amsterdam and we would like to spend time in the "tulip fields" but we haven't a clue when and where to go! Can we use Amsterdam as a base, should we rent a car, etc.

Thanks,

Ratty

When? The last 2 weeks in April. Be aware that Koningendag/Queen's Day, April 30, attracts gazillions of visitors from all over the country (and from outside as well), so either book very early to secure a place to stay, or stay elsewhere if you're not into mad orange crowds (Haarlem is good! and only 20 minutes direct train from Amsterdam). See some pics here: www.flickr.com/photos/jimmyblake/480592970/

Where? The 8 milions tulips in Keukenhof are an obvious good choice (may you go early in the day, as pics will be better, and crowds hopefully lesser). Also worth considering is the short and very vivid train journey between Haarlem and Leiden: tulip fields on both sides, you will wish you had 4 eyes : ) Timetable and cost at www.ns.nl, click on 'english' at the top of the page.

Rent a car? Not necessary at all: take the bus at the Leiden train station (I used to take one from Haarlem's, my favorite train station -- and town -- but am not sure if it's still possible). Keukenhof is located near Lisse.

Hi Ratty,

What one of the former poster said. The last two weeks of April is the best. You are lucky that Eater Holidays is very early this year. Otherwise much more tourist would come to Holland the last weeks of April. The tulip fields are the best seen between Haarlem and Noordwijk. I mostly drive around by car after 18.00 hrs, when all the buses with tourists are gone and you quietly can see the tulipfields. A hotel in Noordwijk for two days would be the best option. Between Haarlem and Noordwijk is the Keukenhof. A touristattraction full of tulips and other flowers. It is a wellknow exhibition worldwide. Otherwise a hotel near the airport could be an option, from where you could rent a car. Parking a car in Amsterdam is a very big problem, unless you book a hotel with parkingspace/garage, but you might have to pay for that. Check for hotelaccomodation at www.booking.com

Enjoy the tulipfields

Tony
