What else to do ??? around Amsterdam

Hello

A rainy day? and never been to an IKEA shop before?

Take the train from Amsterdam Centraal direction Haarlem.

Get of at the (second) stop, station Haarlem Spaarnwoude

There you see the new big blue store. a 5 min walk from this station.

It is only a 13 min train ride (no need to change trains) and it cost you both ways Euro 6.20. trains run every 30 min depart from platform 1

Have a nice day/Vic

Hmmm... cheaper alternative:

Take metro 54 from Central Station in direction of Gein.

Get off at Bullewijk station, also around 13 mins.

At 5 min walk from the station (southwest side, so take south exit) you'll see one of the largest Ikea stores in the country.

Metros run every 7.5-10 minutes, and the journey both ways is 2 x 4 strippen is around 4 euro on the basis of a 15-strippen card. With GVB day card it's free.

All the best,

<Erik> & [Sandya]

You could also make a day of it by visiting IKEA in Utrecht - right next to the Station!!

Ok Erik is right, but it is en rout to Haarlem, nice town to visit.!!!

It is the next stop after IKEA, Haarlem Centraal.

If you buy a train ticket to Haarlem Centraal, you can get of and on with the same ticket. at the IKEA stop. Vic

At the risk of being contentious I must ask. Why on earth would anyone who is visiting one of the most interesting cities in the world want to spend a day or a part of it visiting IKEA?

An IKEA in NL is pretty well identical to one anywhere else in Europe.

Sorry, I'll just have to agree to disagree with you.

IKEA are a worldwide chain - if you don't believe me take a look at www.ikea.com - Macys and Bloomingdales are unique to New York just as Harrods is to London, Gum is to Moscow, etc, etc.

Of course I would consider visiting Macys, Gum and Harrods, in fact I have, all three of them. Would I consider a visit to IKEA if I were visiting, let's just say, Hong Kong? The answer is no, without question. Why would I want to waste my valuable travel time visiting a store identical to the one which is 10km from my door?

Brian - I am surprised!!! A man of your itinerant and nomadic experience should shirley appreciate the delights of IKEA - best place to go for people watching (especially gay couples having a tiff!!! - been there done that!!)

To furriners (such as Koreans) IKEA has an almost mystical reputation; in Saudi we used to be able to order a complete house contents delivered from beds down to teaspoons! Try that at V&D!!

( I am sure you are a secret shopper at IKEA in Amersfoort too!!) ;-)

Stuie,

I plead 100% guilty to having shopped at IKEA - although not the one in Amersfoort since it has opened. I'll also agree that it is a great place to people watch.

If you are interested in such things, as I am, a visit to any branch of IKEA is also a masterclass in the art of retail management, distribution and logistics.

I still wouldn't waste holiday time going to one :-)

I would have to say that I would have to be very, very, very bored before I thought about making an unecessary trip to the land of Swedish meatballs.

Having just furnished my flat from that hellhole (OK it was cheaper than anywhere else) I will not be back for quite some time.

Its like saying you want to travel the world looking at different Mc Donalds and appreciating their arcitectural brilliance
